Thought for the Month: ‘800 to 8000’

This months article is by way of saying a huge 'Thankyou' to all

the many members of our village community who have sup-

ported our '800 Celebration' Project. You may recall that 2017

St Mary's commemorates the 800th anniversary of the first

recorded priest in Buckden - William de Buckden who came in

1217. To celebrate that and to encourage people to share in

the maintenance of St Mary's we made available £800 (80 lots

of £10) and invited individuals, organisations and clubs to use

that money to raise further funds to support the repairs neces-

sary to maintain our beautiful church.

The weekend of 16th - 17th September was the return date

and we had a party. We laid on food, drink and entertainment

and invited all those who had taken part to return with the

money they had raised. The title to this article gives a clue as

to the outcome. Our original 'investment' of £800 has in-

creased by at least tenfold, the final figure will be considerably

higher!

This is an amazing result and it was therefore only fitting that

on Sunday 17th we enjoyed an inspiring service of thanksgiv-

ing and celebration.

The scaffolding around the church gives some indication of the

extent of work currently being undertaken, and though we

have received a substantial grant, we would still be very grate-

ful for any further contributions toward the upkeep of our

amazing church, which represents the heart of Buckden for so

many.

The Christian faith is about a God who cares for us and who

honours us as we honour him. The inspiring presence of St

Mary's which has proved such a blessing to so many people

down the centuries is, we believe, testimony to that faithful-

ness. As we move toward Remembrance and then Christmas

we hope that many of us will wish to join us and find out

about that faithfulness for ourselves.

Best Wishes, Jes
