Buckden Roundabout

March 2017

*800 and counting!!!*

If we gave you £10, could you use your talents to grow that money?

Yes

, then read on…

?

This year is the 800th anniversary of the first recorded priest at St Mary’s Buckden; Rev William de Bugden in 1217.

To celebrate 800 years, to have some fun, raise some funds, create competition and to highlight the many and var-

ied talents of people in Buckden, we propose to give out £10 each to 80 individuals / families / groups in the village

and challenge them to use their talents to grow that £10 into something bigger to add to St Mary’s Restoration Ap-

peal.

How you grow the money is entirely up to you. It could be a sponsored event, a coffee morning, a car boot sale, a

concert, busking, a stall at the village festival in July! If you’re creative, make something to sell or auction. We just

ask that you use your imagination and your talents to the full. Even if you were to take £10 and give back £20, you

would have grown the money but if you could convert £10 to £800 (or more) even better. So get thinking….

The £10s will be given out in St Mary’s on

Saturday 22

nd

April

10.30am – 12noon. It’s “first come, first served”! so

come along with your contact details and your ideas. Coffee and cakes will also be available during the morning. If

you can’t make it on the day, then please contact

giftaid@stmarysbuckden.org.uk

and your name(s) will be added

to the list of recipients if there are any £10s left at the end of the morning.

You will have 5 months in which to “grow the money”. All proceeds are to be returned to St Mary’s during the *800

celebration weekend* on

The money raised will go towards St Mary’s Restoration Appeal. We have a beautiful building here at the centre of

our village. It has been used for many years by the whole community for weddings, baptisms, funerals, school/pre-

school activities, concerts, exhibitions, major festivals, celebrations and Remembrance. Now it is in urgent need of

repairs to the stonework up and around the tower and to the outer walls of the vestry. We also have an historic or-

gan which is over 100 years old and is in need of refurbishment. So please help us to raise funds – enjoy the chal-

lenge, have fun and celebrate!

St Mary’s Restoration

ROYAL BRITISH LEGION

I am writing to say thank you for your support of the 2016 Poppy Appeal.

Special thanks to the house to house collectors of Buckden, the joint Churches Remembrance

Sunday service, and the businesses of Buckden and Perry and HMP Littlehey. Added to these we

received separately, personal gifts all for which we are very, very grateful and, altogether, we

banked around an amazing £5,000.

Our RBL membership numbers fall year on year and it would really help if we could recruit new members. Anybody

can be a member and nothing beyond a modest annual renewal fee, paid preferably by direct debit, is needed. You

do not need to have any connection with the armed services. You do, however, need to be a close relative of a de-

ceased, serving or retired service man or woman who drew at least one week’s pay, to ask for all manner of help.

Membership gives you a periodic magazine and access to a variety of mostly county based social events and activi-

ties including concerts, dances, some National events particularly around Remembrancetide and Christmas and also

specially organised trips to War Graves or the National Arboretum. For this information I need your e-mail address.

If you have any query please contact me, Veronica Hunstone on 810070 (e-mail rbl.buckden@yahoo.co.uk), or our

Membership secretary John Cartwright on 811402 for membership queries.
