FRIENDS IN DEED
A very successful Winter Tea Party was held in February and some 45 people came along. It was much
enjoyed by all. Many thanks to Brenda Steadman, who organised the event, and to all those Friends who
helped out on the day, providing homemade cakes, transport and assisting in a very busy kitchen!
The Drop-in Café in St Mary’s Church is on the second Wednesday of every month, and runs from 1430 to
1600 in the Living Stones Room, so do come along and enjoy a cup of tea or coffee, homemade cakes and a good chat.
Transport is available on request – see below.
For those who live in Buckden, Friends in Deed can offer practical help, emotional support or just someone to visit your home
for a bit of company. This can be on a short or long term basis, depending on the needs of the individual. It is not easy asking for
help but why struggle when there are people happy to help or listen. Everything is in the strictest confidence. If you need
transport to medical/hospital appointments (NB Buckden Surgery has its own transport scheme) or other village social events,
and have no other means of getting there, we have volunteer drivers, registered with Cambridgeshire County Council, who may
be able to take you. Call the Coordinator, number below, for more details.
On the other hand, if you feel that you have a little spare time, and would like to enable Friends in Deed to provide more assis-
tance, then do consider joining us. You could help out with the Drop-in Cafes, visiting people in the village or volunteer as a driv-
er. No-one is expected to do more than they want, and the amount of time you are able to give is entirely under your control.
Do contact our Coordinator if you would like to know more.

BUCKDEN WI
At the February meeting we welcomed Jacqui Speed from "Purlwise" in Kimbolton. Jacqui arrived complete
with spinning wheel and proceeded to give us a demonstration using wool from sheep sourced locally. She
also gave a very informative and interesting talk about the various threads she uses ranging from silk from the
cocoons of mulberry caterpillars to threads from the stems of roses and bamboo stalks!
Our next meeting will be held on March 7th when we will hear all about the Cheapside Hoard – jewellery discovered
in 1912 by workmen using pickaxes to excavate a cellar in London.
The competition is for a piece of antique jewellery.
