Buckden remembers the start of WW1
St, Mary’s Church Buckden from 6pm Sunday 3
rd
August – the eve of the declaration of war.
Local reflection –WW1 songs – poems – readings and a short service of commemoration.
Buckden Churches Together invite the whole community of the village to commemorate the start of World War
One.
From 4pm there will be a small display of items and pictures of local interest – anyone who would like to bring
memorabilia for display are warmly invited to share them – photos, badges, articles, letters, medals etc.
At 6pm there will be a reflection of this momentous occasion through statements made by Government Minsters
on the countdown to war; WW1 songs and poems which illustrate the excitement and willingness to enrol; the
gradual recognition of the suffering. Finally a short service of Commemoration including well known hymns.
The church bells will be rung before 6pm.
The aim is to make this as local as possible.
