Friends of Buckden Towers
We all need new friends.
Why not join the Friends of Buckden Towers?
Living in Buckden, we are so fortunate to have a wonderful historic building, Buckden Towers, right
here in our community.
The site was listed in the Domesday survey of 1086 and, for much of the time since then has been
home to the Bishops of Lincoln. Spanning a period of almost 1000 years, the buildings, still in constant
use, are largely Tudor and Victorian, with evidence of medieval structures. Much of the extensive ‘Little
Park’ has recently been restored and the Knot Garden, or Queen Catherine’s Garden, is a very fine ex-
ample of the style of gardens of the Tudor era.
The aim of the Friends of Buckden Towers is to assist with the preservation of The Towers and gardens
and we have several money-raising events, including the famous Plant Sale, during the year. However,
a large proportion of the funds come from the annual membership fee paid by Friends.
Our member-
ship year starts in September and we ask you to consider joining the Friends of Buckden Tow-
ers and helping to preserve this unique site
. You will find a membership form overleaf.
Finally…………..Guests for the weekend? An outing to organise? A special birthday event to plan?
Why not consider a guided tour of The Towers? You can have a tour of The Towers site, with light re-
freshments if required, for a modest sum. Please contact Chris Lawrence on 01480 812227 for more
details and to book.

There were no great celebrations here when it all ended, we were too war
weary. The influenza epidemic reached its peak in Buckden in November
and December 1918 bringing further misery; meanwhile families had to
wait many months for their loved ones to return, and they were changed
men when they got home.
The parishioners of St. Mary’s Church subscribed £100 to have the war
memorial of grey Cornish granite erected by a local builder and it was
unveiled at a simple ceremony on 22
nd
April 1920.
Barry Jobling will be giving several illustrated talks and displays
on WW1 and Buckden’s part in it, including at the Buckden Local
History Society on 5
th
November and at St. Mary’s Church on 15
th
November, also a display there for the service on 3
rd
August to
commemorate the centenary. He would like to copy any named
photos you may have of local men and women of the time for in-
clusion in these talks (with credit to the providers); please contact
him on 01480 810556 or at bcjobling1@tesco.net.
