FROM YOUR COUNTY COUNCILLOR
From September 2014 all school children aged 5 to 7
will receive free school meals. Currently children that
receive free school meals are entitled to up to £1300.00
in pupil premium which the school receives to help raise
the pupil’s attainment. Once a child is eligible for free
school meals the school will receive the pupil premium
for the following 6 years. There are currently four ways
in which a child will be identified as being eligible for a
premium:
1.
The service premium gives schools extra funding
to support children and young people with par-
ents in the armed forces.
2.
The Free School Meals premium and Ever 6 pre-
mium gives schools extra funding to raise the
attainment of pupils living in low income house-
holds from reception to year 11. Children will still
need to register to receive free school meals and
the pupil premium under the new policy. Children
may be eligible for free school meals who have
parents claiming income support, child tax credit
and income based job seekers allowance.
3.
Previously looked after children pupil premium
gives children extra funding to raise the attain-
ment of pupils who have been previously ‘looked
after’ for one day or more and have left care as
they have either been adopted or leave care un-
der a special guardianship order or a residence
order.
4.
Looked after children premium gives schools ex-
tra funding to raise the attainment of pupils who
are currently ‘looked after’.
Some confusion may arise due to the fact that parents
will still have to register for their child to receive free
school meals in order for the school to receive the pupil
premium even though all children in from 5 to 7 will now
receive free school meals. 1 in 5 children who are eligi-
ble for pupil premium today do not receive the addition-
al funding as they do not register.

“COURIER’’ scam:
Beware! Fraudsters may telephone victims pretending
to be someone from their bank, the police or another
law enforcement agency. A range of tactics are used
to dupe victims in to disclosing bank card and PIN
details, handing over cards and PIN details to couri-
ers or withdrawing money and sending it via courier to
addresses usually in London.
Tactics include:
Asking the victim to assist in a police investiga-
tion .The victim is requested to withdraw a sum
of cash and take it home, where it is then col-
lected by a courier.
Being told there is a corrupt member of staff
within the bank and asking for help in identify-
ing them. The victim is told to withdraw a sum
of money which will be ‘marked,’ with the pur-
pose of it being placed back into the banking
system. A taxi driver is sent round to collect the
cash.
“ALARM’’ scam:
Again the caller will purport to be a police officer.
They will tell you that they want to come to your ad-
dress to fit an alarm and will therefore need to take
some personal information from you.

Council Tax
HDC has recently confirmed that it does not intend to raise its part of Council Tax for the year 2015-2016. The
long term aim is to keep the tax at its current level without any diminution of services. I would appreciate resi-
dents’ views on this.
Offord Level Crossing
I am sure that those of you with an interest visited the exhibition in Offord Village Hall. I believe that the suggested
changes are sensible and will be an advantage to the residents of both Buckden and the Offords.
