VILLAGE NEWS

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH (NHW)

PARCEL MULE

This scam is a new one to me, picking someone to be

targeted to become a ‘’Parcel Mule ‘’ as part of a re-

shipping scam, which results in the victim handling

stolen goods and losing out financially.

Victims are predominantly recruited through job adver-

tisements and dating websites where you are persuad-

ed to have items delivered to your address, and to pay

for postage before sending the items elsewhere. Vic-

tims are contacted through Freelancer websites and

invited to become a ‘’Freight Forwarder’’ as an em-

ployment opportunity. The work is advertised as pro-

cessing packages and forwarding them to clients.

The items being delivered have been purchased

through fraudulent means, including the use of stolen/

fraudulently obtained cards. The items being delivered

are often pieces of electrical equipment or high value

goods such as trainers, perfume and the latest

phones.

How To Protect Yourself.

Do not agree to receive packages at your ad-

dress for someone that you do not know and

trust.

Be cautious of unsolicited job offers or opportu-

nities to make easy money.

When accepting a job offer, verify the company

details provided to you and check whether they

have been registered in UK

Be wary of someone that you met online who

asks you to send money or to receive items .

Protect your privacy and do not give your per-

sonal details to someone that you do not know

and trust.

Callers should use 101 to report less urgent crime or

disorder, to contact the police with a general enquiry

or to speak to a local officer.

If the incident is recognised as an emergency, the op-

erator or police call handler will put the caller through

to 999.

Diary Dates

: Our annual Beetle Drive is on Friday

20

th

November in the House, starting at 8.00 p.m. In

addition to the games of beetle (which were much

enjoyed by those who came last year – it’s light

hearted, and very sociable) there will be mince pies,

mulled wine and a raffle. Everyone is welcome, in-

cluding non members. There will be a small charge

of £1.00 per person.

The ever popular Quiz Night will be on 4

th

March next

year, so put it in your diary now.

The new floor in the Kings Room will have been com-

pleted by the time this goes to print. This will be a

welcome improvement as the floor had been getting

quite dilapidated.

Work is continuing on the viewing platform in the

Knot Garden. It is quite a slow job, in part because it

is being completely rebuilt and in part because it is a

restricted working area, which limits the number of

people who can help. All the main uprights are now

in position and we hope to have completed fitting the

cross beams in the next 2 weeks. The next job after

that will be putting the roof on which is likely to be the

trickiest part of the work.

Our thanks are due to Crusader Scaffolding who

have very kindly lent us the scaffolding and planking,

free of charge.

The garden itself has looked very good this year de-

spite the cold and wet summer. Some replanting is

planned for this winter and if anyone would like to

spend a couple of hours gentle gardening in good

company, volunteers are always welcome. Come

along on a Tuesday morning at about 10.30.

BUCKDEN WI

Terry and his popular Music Quiz

rolled back into Buckden for our

September meeting. This was

much enjoyed, except for the

round on how much we knew

about the W.I.

Not much it turned out! All teams had

kept their jokers to play on the round featuring 60s

music. What can that possibly indicate?

We host the other members in our Group on the

15

th

and members were asked to assist the commit-

tee in making this a good evening, Kathy Brown will

be our speaker.

At our next meeting, on October 6

th

, we will welcome

Mavis Campion who is involved with a charity en-

couraging motivation for the disabled.

The Competition is for a wheeled item (it is not ex-

pected that you bring your husband’s ride-on lawn

mower, please think long and hard about this one)

See you there!
