Buckden Cricket Club - a season to remember

The 2015 cricket season is drawing to a close and Buckden Cricket Club have enjoyed a very successful season.

The season started back in May and will conclude in the next couple of weeks. 2015 marks 125 years of cricket in

Buckden, a history to be proud of.

Congratulations to the 1st XI who have just achieved promotion from Hunts League Division 3 to Division 2. Once

again the team has been led by Jonathan Mews, the captain. With a number of new younger players having

been recruited, and more consistent team selection than in recent seasons, success this year has quickly fol-

lowed. The team has also secured a spot in the Coote Cup Final once again, the final will be played on Sunday

the 13th September, hopefully a win will see the club retain the trophy. A very successful season has been high-

lighted by excellent batting, 10 centuries being scored, Alex Marsh & Jonathan Mews (3 each), Laurie Marsh &

Daniel Coles (2 each).

The 2nd XI have also had a good season, finishing 4th in the Hunts League Division 5B. Once again a better re-

sult than in previous years. This team consists of some older experienced players, but is primarily aimed at intro-

ducing the younger players to senior cricket.

The future of Buckden Cricket Club is dependant on more younger players being introduced to the game, and the

club presently runs thriving U13's; U11's and U9's teams. All of these teams played in the Junior County Leagues

this season. Poppy O'Driscoll, Ryan Crouchman and Louis Deans excelled and were awarded coaches player of

the year for their age group, receiving club shirts during the Chairmans T70 Bash.

Sunday the 9th August heralded the Chairmans T70 Bash, a joint celebration of the cricket club and chairman

Tony Cooks 70th Birthday. It was a fabulous day, the sun shone and Tony welcomed friends, family, players old

and new, supporters and a couple of England players too! Tony assembled a team of All Stars, captained by his

grandson Ben Lemmon, to play against Buckden, which included England Ashes Legend Ashley Giles, and ex

England and Warwickshire player Darren Maddy. The All Stars scored 297-5 in 35 overs with Darren Maddy scor-

ing a century and Ashley Giles 47. Buckden CC, captained by Jonathan Mews, managed to score 258-5 with Lau-

rie Marsh hitting a century too. Cream tea, cakes and a hog roast added to the celebration. Our youth section

winners received their awards from Ashley and Darren, a day to remember for them all. The game also provided

an opportunity to raise funds for the club and local cancer charities. Together over £1100 was raised, grateful

thanks to everyone who supported the day, setting up, playing, selling raffle tickets, making cakes, clearing up

and for all the donations and gifts received. It really was a wonderful day made special by all those who attended.

Thanks also to Huntingdon Waitrose for their support of the club’s special day.

The AGM will be held in November this year and if you would like to be involved in the running of the club, play-

ing, or you have a budding young cricketer in your family, you are warmly invited to attend. The actual date has

yet to be confirmed but will be published in the next issue of The Roundabout.

Thank you to all those that have supported the club during the season. Do come and support your local team to

build on their successes this year. Contact details below.
