Buckden Towers Heritage Day
On Sunday 14
th
September Buckden Towers was open to the public under the English Heritage
Day scheme. Last year was a miserable day - cold, wet and windy. What a contrast this year. It
was not as hot and sunny as our Plant Sale Day but warm, calm and dry.
The Knot Garden was at its best, having been carefully tended by the volunteer gardeners all
year. Jane Croft and Wendy Thelwall put on another display of Tudor dyeing techniques, exhibit-
ing some of the lovely colours achieved from plants in those days. Just inside the Gatehouse, Susan Durbidge
and her volunteer helpers dressed in period costume, offered pilgrim medallion making, a demonstration of using
a foot-operated wood lathe and, for the children, a ‘guess the object’ quiz with period objects.
The Refectory was manned by Ann Nicol and her team of helpers serving excellent teas and cakes which sold
out. Ann also organised the produce and bric-a-brac stall together with her speciality, the lavender stall. The pro-
duce sold well, particularly the award winning honey, the produce of the bees kept in a corner of the sheep field
of The Towers. The tours were very popular this year, with Christine Lawrence’s team taking some large groups
round the Church, part of the Palace and the Knot Garden.
Our thanks to all who put in an afternoon of hard work, especially to the helpers who set up and cleared away
and to the owners for their kind permission to open The Towers. It was a very enjoyable and successful after-
noon, raising over £500 for the future maintenance of this Grade 1 listed historic site.
John Thelwall, Chairman
