BUCKDEN WI
In our September meeting we welcomed Julia from ACWW ( Associated Country Women of
the World). Even though this is a WI supported charity many of us knew very little about it.
Julia explained that this is a "not for profit" charity to help and support rural women and
their families around the world by raising standards of living, giving educational opportuni-
ties and a voice to women at international level through its links with UN agencies.
Every project undertaken must be self-perpetuating and sustainable and we were given the example of a woman in
Africa being given a milch cow, taught how to make cheese, yogurt etc from the milk and then selling the resulting
produce. Some of that money would then be given back to the project so that another milch cow could be pur-
chased and given to another woman. Meanwhile the woman is earning a salary for herself and her family.
We, as WI members, can raise money for the ACWW by contributing to the Pennies for Friendship Fund. At Buckden
we ask our members to choose competition winners by placing a coin beside the item they feel should win and this
money goes into the ACWW fund. It was suggested that we all count up the number of shoes we own and give 20p.
per pair towards the fund. Knowing how passionate we girls are about our shoes, this would make a substantial
contribution!! It was a very thought provoking evening, ably and entertainingly presented by Julia.
Our next meeting in the Millard Suite will be on Tuesday, 2nd October at 7.30 and is entitled "Pioneers of WW1 –
First Aid Nursing Yeomanry". The competition is for an item from WW1.

Bookings
Along with all our regular hirers this month we have a wedding reception, a craft fayre (20
th
), a kid’s party, a
meeting of the Mid Anglia Philatelic Federation, preschool’s Halloween party and the Crystal Blues weekend.
Improvements
The kitchen has been redecorated and new ovens have been installed. The pavilion is back up and running fully
again after the extensive water damage which occurred earlier in the year. It has been repaired and repainted,
has had extractor fans fitted and has also had a deep clean. It is looking much better than it has done for a long
time.
Signs are in the process of being purchased to put on the fence around the children’s playground to hopefully
prevent balls being kicked against it.
