Thought for the month

The Christian churches are now celebrating the liturgical season of Lent and at the end of the month we will begin

the celebration of Holy Week.

During the Lenten season there are various activities run by the churches in Buckden to help us enter into the

spirit of this season. For example, on the Mondays of Lent, (2

March) from 12:30 till 2:00 pm in the

Methodist Hall there will be a study lunch, organised by the Buckden & District Churches Together. This is a sim-

ple lunch of bread and soup followed by a presentation and discussion on different aspects of Celtic spirituality.

All will be most welcome and more details can be found elsewhere in The Roundabout.

The culmination of the Lenten Season is what we call Holy Week; Holy Week because during it Christians recall

the momentous events in the history of salvation namely the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

This year Holy Week begins at the end of this month with what we call Palm Sunday when we remember the

event in Jesus’ life as he is welcomed into Jerusalem by adoring crowds. Jesus and his disciples were making

their way to Jerusalem to celebrate the Jewish festival of Passover. Jesus’ reputation had gone before him as a

great story-teller, teacher and miracle-worker. The crowds welcomed him as they would a king by waving palm

branches (hence the name) and laid branches and their cloaks on the road for him to pass over.

By Thursday of Holy Week, when we remember the Last Supper and the arrest of Jesus, the authorities had

turned the people against Jesus and they were calling for him to be crucified.

Let us pray that as we celebrate the season of Lent we may learn the significance and deepen our understanding

of what Jesus has done for us through his life, death and resurrection, as the Saviour of the world.
