Thought for the month
Dear Friends,
St Mary’s 800 Appeal is under way. Many thanks to those who have already contributed or have ‘taken their tenner’
and are devising cunning plans to increase it. We are hearing of several imaginative ideas of raising funds and we
hope that as we move into summer many more organisations in the village will be interested in in supporting us.
St Mary’s is a church for the whole village and in its existing building has served the village for nearly 600 years. We
like to think that we would all wish to hand it on to those who will succeed us in as good a condition as we inherited
it. Thank you for your continuing help.
By the time you read this we will be supposedly approaching the height of summer, although as I write the tempera-
ture is struggling to reach double figures. But whatever the weather there is still something magical about this time
of the year, with the long and hopefully warm days and the beauty of summer flora and fauna in full bloom.
This year of course there will be a serious tinge to summer as we prepare for the General Election, our third national
vote in three years. Clearly it is a significant election in the context of the future direction of our country. My prayer
is that the debate at this election is characterised by a degree of graciousness, integrity and that as a nation we will
give our support to our new government whatever the outcome.
Whatever our worldview we would all agree, I hope, that we live in a world that is naturally beautiful. The Christian
belief, of course, is that the beauty and detail of our world reflects the character of a loving God who is closely inter-
ested and involved in His world. Jesus talked about the beauty in apparently small parts of creation such as the flow-
ers in the fields and the birds in the air. My hope and prayer is that wherever we stand with God, we have the
chance of enjoying this beauty over the course of the summer.
Best wishes,
Jes
