BUCKDEN WI
Our speaker in May was Pam Siddell, one of our members, who nobly stepped into the breach at very short
notice. Her talk was about the history of Bournville village noted for its connection with the Cadbury family.
It was founded by George Cadbury who strongly believed that chocolate was a healthy alternative to alcohol!
He planned and built, at his own expense, a model village which would "alleviate the evils of modern,
more cramped, living conditions". His houses were to have gardens so that his workers could grow their own vegetables and
have a healthier life style. He laid out parks and open spaces, pioneered pension schemes, a full medical service and built
schools. Being a staunch temperance Quaker, no public houses were allowed!! It was a most interesting and informative talk,
especially relevant as Pam went to school close to the factory and could judge the time of day by the smell of chocolate! Thank
you, Pam.
Our next meeting is on June 6th and is entitled "Beating the cistern – tips from a lady plumber". It should be most amusing and
all are welcome. The Competition is for a poem about water so, come on ladies, get searching for poems or, better still, get
poetic!
