Thought for the month

Holidays

As the weather warms up many of us will be taking or looking forward to taking a summer holiday. Holidays, short

breaks and days off that give us a break from our usual routine play a vital part in all our lives. They often open up

new horizons and can prove a much needed time of genuine refreshment and re-creation. W H Davies the Welsh

tramp-poet, put the point memorably in his well-known lines on Leisure:

What is life if, full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare …

… No time to turn at Beauty’s glance,

And watch her feet, how they can dance ….

… A poor life this if, full of care,

We have no time to stand and stare.

Time off for relaxation, in the midst of a busy life, is not a self-indulgent luxury but a genuine necessity. We all

need time for rest and renewal, both physically and spiritually. Taking a break is not escapist for we return to our

daily life with clearer vision and renewed energy. When the holiday ends we still need to face up to the continuing

challenges of home and family, daily work and church duties. But taking a break means that we return refreshed

and strengthened and better equipped for the life of discipleship to which we are called.

Whatever the summer months mean to you, I pray that they may be a time of great blessing.
