Thought for themonth
byRevdAllyBarrett, Vicar of St Mary’s
At the endof thismonthmy familyand I will be saying our goodbyes toSt Mary’s and to the village that has been
our home for the last seven years.Wewould all like to thank you, thepeople of Buckden, for thewarmthof your
welcome, the genuineness of your friendship, and the depthof your support for us as a family. It has truly been a
wonderful seven years and I know that we shall always treasureand cherishourmemories of the village andof
you all.
Facing change can be ananxious time if we fear the unknown futureand cling instead toan idealisedpast or pre-
sent; it can also be tough if we let ourselves focus toomuch on the loose ends left behind, or the things left incom-
plete. This is prettymuchan inevitable fact of life!
No doubt therewill bemany things that I donot quitemanage todobefore I leave, no doubt therewill always be
things that I remember havinggot wrong – ‘dropped catches’ that I wish I’d caught. We canall look at our past
and find things to regret, but we can also learn to lookwith realistic generosity, and celebratewhat has been
good, too.
Most of all, we can learn to accept ourselves as glorious yet fallible peopleof God, full of potential, and capableof
great achievements aswell as greatmistakes. Inour triumphs and our failureswe canhold onto the fundamental
truth that we are beloved of God, and that he loves us enough both to accept us aswe are, and gently to help us
becomemore andmore thepeoplewewere created to be.
There is aprayer that I use often to ‘keepmehonest’ when things gowell, and to consolemewhen things have
gonewrong, and I share it with you now:
Lord, thank you for knowingme better than I knowmyself, and for allowingme to knowmyself better than others
knowme. Makeme, I pray, better than they suppose, and forgiveme for what they donot know. Amen.
I hope that youwill remembermy timeherewith generous realism, as someonewhowas neither perfect nor a
disaster! And I pray that whoever is your next Vicar will find, as I did, that theyhave come to aplacewhere there
is love and forgiveness, encouragement, enthusiasm, and a real sense of what it is tobe a community.
Godbless you all
RevdAlly
