NEIGHBOURHOODWATCH (NHW)
Local Crime.
The focus of crimes in May was on the theft of
cycles and scooters and from vehicles. Commer-
cial vehicles are particularly at risk as they often
carry valuable trade equipment. If possible, park
such vehicles with the main access doors close
to a building or wall where they cannot be
opened.
NWReport toAnnual ParishMeeting.
At the Parish Council’s Annual Meeting on 17
th
June, the lead NW Coordinator for Buckden
gave a short briefing on recent developments in
NW nationally and locally.
He reported that, In theautumnof last year, the
HomeOffice decided to re-invigorateNW partly
in response to the reduction in police numbers.
Apart from some fine-tuning of the organisation,
themain changewas the introduction of ana-
tionwidewebsitewhich embracedall NW
schemes in the country and links toall organisa-
tionswhich are involved in fighting crime, such
as theFire andRescueService andTrading
Standards. It alsogives comprehensive advice
on crimepreventionmeasures andhow to set up
and run local NW schemes. Organisers of NW
schemes can show its geographical details and
membership on the siteand use it to contact its
members. Crime incidents can alsobe shownon
it by thepolice.
However, themost important andwelcome fea-
tureof thewebsitewas the introduction of an
alert systemwhereby thepolice and other organ-
isations can issueup-to-the-minute information
on crime threats and incidents andput out regu-
lar crime summaries andpolice priorities. Both
theHuntingdonandSt Neots police use the site
frequently for thesepurposes. Having registered
with the system, you candecidewhich reports
and fromwhom youwish to receive them and
immediately respond to them if necessary.
After some teethingproblems, the system is now
workingwell although the take-up byBuckden
residents has been rather slow.
