Thought for the Month

As I write this Thought for the Month of January, we’re

approaching the last week of November, although any-

one would be forgiven for thinking it’s nearly Christmas

as, in many shops, decorations and seasonal music have

been in evidence since the middle of October. Mind

you, there’s an oddly unsettled look to the High Street

this afternoon, with the hanging baskets of The George

and Ann Furbank still looking fabulous, while across the

road The Lion has its beautiful Christmas trees and lights

displayed.

It’s probably an ageing thing; I get older, policemen get

younger, Christmas creeps a little closer to Bonfire Night

and New Year’s Eve bedtime gets earlier. But I digress

(another side-effect of ageing).

One thing is for sure: Tuesday, the first of January, will

be the first day of 2019. It’s the start of a new year and,

like millions of others throughout the world, we may see

it as a chance for a fresh start. A special day to sweep

away the detritus of last year’s failures and begin to

form new habits that will improve our lives.

Of course, many of these New Year’s resolutions will last

only slightly longer than the Christmas tree, which is

why I never bother keeping a diary.

The good news is though, whenever you’re reading this,

there’s no need to wait for a special day to make im-

portant changes. Tomorrow will always be the first day

of the rest of your life and it’s never too late for a fresh

start. Nobody ever said it was going to be easy, but the

rewards of achieving a positive change are immense,

and here’s an encouraging thought: God would very

much like to help you achieve your full potential, so why

not have a quiet word with Him – He’s always listening

and would love to hear from you!

A very happy and fulfilling New Year to you, from the

Baptist Church.
