Operation Christmas Child
Shoebox Appeal 2018
I would like to say a very big THANK YOU to
everyone who contributed to the Shoebox
Appeal as
306
shoeboxes were collected.
This means that some children in poor coun-
tries will have a happier Christmas. That in
effect is a smile on a child’s face, so thank
you all again for making this possible. It is a
wonderful achievement by everyone

Notes from a Buckden Cyclist
Thank you to Neighbour Watch for highlighting the presence
of cyclists on our streets. I love being out and about on my
bike – often three or four times a day. Along Leadens Lane
the other morning were lots of goldfinches – dainty little
birds; then there was the field covered with greylag geese
here for the winter; and field fares and lapwings are visiting
us, too.
Along the way there are hazardous potholes or puddles which
I may have to avoid; stones and largish twigs can be a prob-
lem, too, so, drivers please be aware that we cyclists may not
always ride in a straight line! With regard to puddles, it is real-
ly miserable to arrive home cold, wet and muddy because a
driver has not given us enough space, or slowed down
enough, as they pass, and we are spattered with dirty wa-
ter. You may see me on the pavement, sometimes, if I feel
unsafe on the road, especially at night, and particularly in Sil-
ver Street.
Thank you to all drivers who do wait with patience behind me
– that is most of you. My sturdy steed is no lightweight rac-
ing bike and advancing years mean I don’t pedal as fast as I
used to, so I am very appreciative of your patience and do try
to thank you as you pass.
We are a Group covering Cambridgeshire that is dedicat-
ed to improving the standard of driving and riding and in
so doing help to reduce the number of collisions on our
roads.
You can join the Group for a nominal annual subscription and then be coached
by volunteer Tutors (male and female) who are all qualified advanced drivers
or riders. We encourage people to take the RoSPA Test but if you just want to
improve your standard of driving or riding then that is enough of a reward.
We promote the System of Car Control as taught to police drivers. The System
is a way of approaching and negotiating hazards that is methodical, safe and
leaves nothing to chance.
