BUCKDEN NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

PHANTOM DEBT COLLECTORS and BAILIFFS FRAUD ALERT

There have been increases in the number of calls to members of the public by bogus bailiffs requesting payment for a ‘’phantom

debt.” The fraud involves being cold-called by someone purporting to be a bailiff working on behalf of a court, attempting to

recover funds for a non-existent debt. The caller will request payment by means of bank transfer and if this is refused, will

threaten to visit the premises to recover the debt that is owed. A range of different businesses and individuals are being target-

ed.

TIPS FOR STAYING SAFE

Confirm what the debt is regarding. Bailiffs are used to recover certain debts such as council tax, child support and compensa-

tion orders. Bailiffs are not used to recover debts relating to private advertisements; these would be collected by debt collec-

tors.

Debt collectors do not have the same legal powers as bailiffs and will not have special court authorisation to act. Double check

with the court or originating company to confirm whether the call is legitimate. if you use landline a make sure you hear the

dialling tone prior to dialling as the caller may still be on the line. Be sure to independently search for a telephone number to

call and clarify, never use number provided by the caller. Request details of the debt in writing to confirm its legitimacy, do not

feel rushed or intimidated.

Christmas Miscellany

In December we will host our Christmas Miscellany. This will be held on Wednesday 13th December at 7.30pm and, as usual,

our venue will be Brampton Memorial Hall, Thrapston Road, Brampton, Huntingdon, PE28 4TB.

We will begin with a short talk by Oliver Burke, who is the Director of Living Landscapes for the Wildlife Trusts, Bedfordshire,

Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. Oliver will give an overview of conservation successes during the past year, illustrating

this with recent wildlife sightings.

This will be followed by our traditional Christmas wildlife quiz and raffle, which will be accompanied by mince pies and wine.

Anyone with an interest in wildlife is most welcome to attend. Booking is not necessary. Entrance charge £2.50 (accompanied

children free). Please contact Tim on 01480 457795 for more information.

Part of the Wildlife Trust for Bedfordshire, Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire. Registered Charity No: 1000412
