Thought for themonth
Dear all,
We come, thismonth, to the greatest of all ChristianFestivals aswe celebrate the death and resurrection of Jesus
Christ, theSon of God.
Thiswas the reasonHe came into theworld! Hewas born to die! It is significant that the ApostlesCreed, one of
the earliest summaries of Christian faith, makes no mention of the earthly ministry of Christ, but leaps from the
cradle to the cross: “…Hewas born of theVirginMary, suffered under PontiusPilate, was crucified, dead and bur-
ied…”
Sowhy didHe die? Thehymnwriter put it like this:
“Hedied that wemight be forgiven,
He died tomakeus good,
That wemight go at last to heaven,
Saved byHis precious blood.”
The Bible tells us that “All have sinned and come short of the glory of God” (Romans 3:23) – and the conse-
quence of our sin is that we deserve to die: “The wages of sin is death” (Romans 6:23). God knew that we could
not save ourselves – it would be as impossible as aman sinking in quicksand trying to haul himself out of danger
by pulling on his shoe laces!! But God loves us, and wanted to do something about our desperate condition.
Since He is holy, and sin is an offence to Him, He could not simply “turn a blind eye” and forgive everyone. His
solutionwas to sendHis sinlessSon to takeour punishment, dying in our place.
HisResurrection is the proof that what He did inHis deathwas enough for all whowould believe inHim! And it is
our guarantee that death, for the believer, is not the end of the story, but the beginning of a glorious eternity! Do
you know that this is your future? You can – if youwill accept God’s gift of aSaviour!
Godbless you all,
Paul (Minister of Perry andOffordBaptist Church)
