Third Scout Beer Festival – the best yet!
1
st
Southoe and Buckden Scouts held their third Beer Festi-
val, over the weekend of 14-15
th
September, fundraising to
support their activities and hopefully a future expansion of
the Scout Hut. As in previous years, Steve Reynolds master-
minded the event, with John Draycott, organising the local
beer and cider. For the first time, a gin bar served those with
more delicate tastes.
Entertainment on Friday evening was provided by Junkyard
Preachers, with a lively set. The chips served throughout the
evening proved another successful innovation, worthy of
repeating next year.
Saturday afternoon started slowly, but built up quickly from
3.30pm, when the Two Old Gits started on the banjo and
accordion – now a traditional part of the Saturday afternoon
entertainment. This was followed by Ludo and his guitar, all
the way from Ireland, valiantly attempting to encourage peo-
ple in from the sunshine. No one is quite sure whether this
was helped or hindered by Rick’s comedy routine.
As the afternoon moved into early evening, the first indica-
tions of a successful event became apparent, as additional
gin deliveries were arranged, and the popular beers started
running low. Never fear – plenty more to go and back-up
arrangements were in place. Pete’s Mexican food was prov-
ing popular and the Alison Lane band arrived to take over
the music mantle. Midway through their first set, the beer
situation started to become critical, with several barrels run-
ning out. Time to call in the back-up supplies. Unfortunately,
in the 200 yards between Draycott Breweries and Buckden
Scout Hut, the fully laden beer wagon broke down! Perhaps
the carthorse shed a shoe. For 30 desperate minutes we
were faced with a bar full of customers, only able to offer
cider and Fosters. Finally, Jacobs Choice beer was delivered
and normal service resumed.
A big thanks to all the local companies, and individuals, who
supported by sponsoring beers and supplies, it was a hugely
successful event, raising almost double the amount from the
last two years. “Cheers” to everyone who came along – see
you again next year!
