Buckden Roundabout

March 2019

Village News

Bookings

Along with all our regular hirers this month we have the St

Mary’s Charity Auction (2

nd

), Jivenites Weekender, two pri-

vate parties, a Yoga Day and a kid’s party.

Lifebuoys by the Valley

There are two lifebuoys by the Valley and occasionally they

are removed from the housing units and thrown in the Val-

ley. These lifebuoys have been put up for the safety of

those who walk around the Valley. The housing units are

tied together by a plastic cable tie so it does take some de-

termination to undo them. The Trust would like to thank all

those kind people who have taken the lifebuoys back out of

the water and put them back again.

Bowls Club

Buckden Bowls Club is looking for new members to join

them. It’s a great way to get out in the fresh air as the

warmer weather starts and also to socialize. For more infor-

mation please contact Brian Moore on 812112.

Don’t forget that as residents of Buckden you all receive

discounted rates on Hall hire. Please call or email me if

you would like to find out more information

BUCKDEN WI

A special visitor attended our February

meeting in the person of Eric, an eight-

month-old black Labrador puppy, who

comes from a family of assistance dogs

and is in training to be a ‘Hearing Dog

for the Deaf’. ‘Hearing Dogs..’ founded in 1982, has placed

2,467 dogs with 939 hearing-impaired people over the years.

460 dogs are currently in training but many more are needed.

Eric is being fostered by Emma Spencer, one of our own mem-

bers. Having hearing problems herself, she was keen to volun-

teer with this wonderful charity which breeds and trains dogs

to accompany people with severe hearing loss, not only to

alert them to sounds such as the ringing of the phone or door-

bell, or alarms of various kinds, but also, and most crucially, to

give confidence so that owners feel able to go out and about

and take up full lives once more. This is particularly valuable

in work with children, helping them to feel less isolated and

frustrated because of their deafness.

Emma’s role is to take Eric through a structured basic training

and socialisation programme for 18 months or so, teaching

commands both verbally and by hand signals, for which he

has so far gained his one star certificate. Now they are work-

ing together towards two stars which will earn him a special

coat denoting that as an assistance dog in training he may

have access to shops, cafes and public areas. This was a popu-

lar talk in which members engaged with their own questions

and experiences, not to mention lots of cuddles with Eric at

the end! We look forward to an up-date next year.

At our next meeting on 5

th

March, we’ll be learning about the

Vikings from Trevor Gunton and the competition will be for a

Scandinavian memento. As always, visitors will be most wel-

come.

World Day of Prayer

(Formerly Women's World Day of Prayer)

Friday 1st March 2019

11am - St Hugh's Church Buckden

Do join us for this lovely service, written this year

by the women of Slovenia

Light lunch served after the service.

Prayers for our village and the wider world

Never a day goes by without people praying about the cares

of the world and the needs of individuals. At St Mary's the

door is open every day and a New Year's initiative has been

to fix the time for weekday prayers at 2.15 pm (see page ?).

There is a box for prayer requests on the table in the South

East corner of the nave and these are included in this prayer

time. Anyone who would like to come and join in is warmly

welcome.
