Thought for the month
Holidays are nearly upon us. Universities are finished for the year, GCSEs and A-Levels are almost
done, school will be out by the end of the month and thoughts turn to time out, relaxation and holidays.
Summer is also a time for plenty of highlights in the sporting calendar with events such as Wimbledon,
Tour de France, British Grand Prix, cricket and The Ashes, golf and The Open. Even regular features
in The Roundabout have a holiday!
I don’t know if you can find in the Bible whether Jesus took a holiday or not but he certainly had time
out. For example, in Luke’s Gospel (5:16), we read that Jesus would go off by himself to a lonely place
to pray. He would set out in the early morning before the others were around so that he could have
time for himself and the way he was able to recharge his batteries was to spend time in prayer to his
Father. Sometimes he would take the disciples with him. On one occasion in the Gospel of Mark
(6:30ff) the disciples had just returned from a special mission and Jesus saw that they were tired and
had no time even to eat so they got into a boat and crossed the lake to a quiet spot to rest awhile. They
had to get away from the people who were eager to see and hear Jesus and his companions.
We all need to time to rest and relax, have a change of scenery, recharge our batteries and the best
time to do that is during the warm summer months. I hope everyone has the opportunity to get away to
enjoy the rest. Sometimes holidays can be busy, full of activity and even stressful if things don’t quite
go to plan. It might be good to try and plan into your holiday some quiet time, if not for prayer then at
least time to reflect on life and have some ‘me’ time. But having time to chat with God is also good.
Many of you will remember Fr. Paul Smyth from his time at The Towers. On 8
th
July he will be celebrat-
ing his 25
th
Anniversary as a priest. Nearly half of those years were here at Buckden and Paul was very
much involved in the life of the local Catholic community and the St. Claret Centre at The Towers and
also much of the ecumenical activities that take place each year in the village. There will be a special
Mass of Thanksgiving followed by a small reception at 7.00 pm on that day to which all are invited.
Happy holidays.
