Buckden Roundabout
January 2019
School & Pre-school
The children loved every minute of the run-up to Christmas,
writing Santa letters, making some beautiful crafts and cards,
and practising their numeral recognition by sticking the cor-
rect number of decorations on their festive number lines.
They also enjoyed turning the home corner into a vets sur-
gery, learning about Hanukkah and, of course, their Christ-
mas party.
Our open morning and craft event saw us welcome plenty of
families and visitors into Preschool to enjoy activities with
the children and sample our sensory circuits sessions, and
many were back again just over a week later to hear the chil-
dren sing their hearts out at the Christmas concert. Not a dry
eye in the house!
Thank you to everyone who supported our stall at Buckden’s
Christmas Lights Festival and played our festive Lucky Lolli-
pops game. We raised £230 to spend on resources and activi-
ties for Preschool and had a lovely afternoon seeing familiar
faces and greeting old friends. Another year has gone by and
the ex-Preschoolers are taller than ever!
As we look forward to 2019 and the spring term at Preschool,
with its Pancake Flip and Easter activities to enjoy, we wish
you all a very Happy New Year.
There are still some places available, so do get in touch if you

BUCKDEN CHURCH OF
ENGLAND SCHOOL
(Primary Academy Trust)
December 2018
The school community has been busy on the run up to Christ-
mas with a wide range of activities and events.
Our Reception children performed their play ‘The Wriggly Na-
tivity’ to the school, family and friends. Their first performance
at Buckden Academy was beautifully acted and sung. The chil-
dren in Years 1 and 2 also performed their Christmas play ‘The
Magical Land of Sleep’ to the school community, family and
friends. Another very accomplished performance was given by
the children. Well done to all our budding actors and actresses
and to the staff who turned their hand to directing, producing,
costume making and prompters.
We invited our parents to share Christmas dinner with us. The
hall was decorated and Christmas songs rang out! We had two
sittings, and all our children and visitors enjoyed their dinner.
A massive well done and thank you to Mrs Bigg and her team
for a fabulous dinner.
The children in Years 5/6 have been busy singing their Christ-
mas carols and songs at the Buckden Christmas Lights Switch-
On, as well as visiting the residents of Hardwick Dene. Our
annual Key Stage 2 Christmas Carol Concert was held at St
Marys Church and was attended by many parents and friends
of the school. This is always a festive occasion and this year
was no exception.
Our Year 4 children visited the Museum of Archaeology & An-
thropology and the Museum of Zoology in Cambridge. As part
of their topic work, they studied the Mayans and rainforests at
the Museum of Archaeology & Anthropology, and science at
the Museum of Zoology. Everyone had a very busy and exciting
day.
Our PTA have also been very busy. At the Christmas Lights
Switch-On they were busy manning Santa’s Grotto. They also
organised a shop where the children could buy Christmas pre-
sents for their family and the end of term Christmas discos for
the children at school. Thank you to their hard work fundrais-
ing this term – they have more fundraising events planned for
the Spring Term.
The school would like to thank all parent helpers and friends
who regularly come into school to work with the children. Your
help is very much welcomed and appreciated. May we take the
opportunity to wish the residents of Buckden a very happy and
prosperous new year.
The school re-opens for the Spring Term on Monday 7

Did you know…?
...Morris Close, near Buckden Surgery, was named after Dr
Michael Morris who was a GP in Buckden for many years.
...Burberry Road was named after William Burberry, who set
up a charity for the poor of Buckden in 1558. His charity is
still active 460 years later, being part of the Almshouse Chari-
ties of James South and William Burberry
...Copes Close was named after the Cope family, who owned
the farm on which the close is built.
