Firstly, thank you to everyone who supported our
Breakfast with Santa and Christmas Fayre event,
whether you donated, organised, ran a stall, ran the
music and movement session (Pauline Coker –
thank you!) or came along on the day. The turnout
wasn’t as big as we’d hoped for, and there were
many children in Buckden who missed having a
delicious breakfast with Santa and a dance with
Pauline - where were they?! However, the event,
together with the sale of our remaining chocolate
and reindeer food stock in the following week,
raised £508 – far from a record, but excellent con-
sidering the turnout.
Last month we had several new starters, who are
all now settling into the hustle and bustle or pre-
school life. We started the month with two number
weeks when we focused on recognising written
numbers and counting, and then started focussing
on letters. We also marked Australia Day on the
26
th
, making Australian flags, aboriginal collages
and lovely lamingtons.
This month, we’re looking forward to learning about
Chinese New Year – always a favourite with both
staff and children, as it always involves colourful
craft activities and delicious Chinese food – and
getting competitive with our annual Sponsored Pan-
cake Flip. Frying pans at the ready!
Finally, a huge thank you to our lovely Buckden
librarian Ann, who goes to great lengths to rein-
force our theme of the week on our library vis-
its, and all the volunteers too.
We always get a
warm welcome and they can’t do enough to help. If
your child isn’t a member of the library yet, we
heartily recommend taking them along. It’s a great
way to give your child a wide choice of story and
fact books, there are competitions to enter and Sto-
rytime sessions to attend, and some super DVDs to
borrow too. You might even find something for your-
self!

BUCKDEN CHURCH OF
ENGLAND SCHOOL
(Primary Academy Trust)
January 2016
We returned after the Christmas holidays ready for the
new term. It is a much quieter time at school following
the hectic build up to Christmas.
In January we welcomed a new teacher to our staff.
Mrs Liz Masters is teaching in a Year 6 class. She
takes over from Mrs Andrea Loakes who sadly left the
school in December to relocate to the Norfolk coast with
her family. Welcome to Mrs Masters.
The school had a non-uniform day to raise money for
the Calderdale schools affected by the floods over
Christmas. All our children came to school wearing non
uniform for a donation. Thanks to the generosity of our
parents we raised £218.40, which has been sent to the
appeal organisers.
Our Year 4, 5 and 6 pupils attended the Young Voices
concert at The 02 in London. This is a national event
with schools from all over the country attending. On the
day of our concert there were over 5,000 children sing-
ing, accompanied by a wide range of musicians and
artists, to create an amazing performance.
A
ll the music
was specially selected and gave our children a wide
variety of songs to perform. We ended the day with a
concert - many of our parents were able to come along
to enjoy the concert. We arrived back at school at mid-
night. What an exciting, eventful and tiring day, but we
all had a wonderful time.
Sheila Murdoch
The family would like to say a big Thank You to all
those who sent flowers, cards and made telephone
calls following the death of Sheila at the end of No-
vember. Also the many friends who attended the
‘Celebration of her life’ service at St Mary’s Church,
Buckden, with very special thanks to Rev Jes Salt
& Rev Pete Taylor for their part in conducting such
a heart-warming & happy service
