VILLAGE NEWS

Buckden Over Sixties Club

This will be the last time that I will address you, the Club will cease to exist on December 31 2014. The numbers

of members has been falling steadily over the years and it has been impossible to get new members for the com-

mittee to continue to function. The government deciding to raise the retirement age has been the last straw. Who

wants to turn out after a day at work to come to a club for entertainment and tea and biscuits!

The Members Christmas dinner will take place on Friday December 12 - 6.30 for 7pm dinner at the Lion. This will

be the last meeting. It has been on the whole a pleasure since I arrived in the village on August 5 1986 to serve

on the committee and I want to think all the loyal members who have come to the club over the years and enjoyed

the outings.

Outings can still be found with H.A.C.T. ring 01480 411114 or contact me at 8 Cranfield Way or ring 811054 for

membership forms. The outings are varied and good value with a door to door service.

There is also the Monday club meeting once a fortnight, details can be found in the roundabout.

Well folks, that is all, I wish you all a Happy Christmas and life. Pat Wright Chair

FRIENDS IN DEED

Our AGM was held on 15 October and was well attended. There have been several changes in the Committee

and, if you were not present and would like to know how Friends in Deed fared over the past year then you will be

interested in the Coordinator’s Report. It gives an excellent overview of our activities and paper copies are availa-

ble.

After the usual AGM ‘business’ we were given an excellent talk by Kathy Bowles on the role of the Care Network

Cambridgeshire (CNC), an umbrella organisation to which we are affiliated. Their mission is to help older, isolat-

ed and vulnerable people living in Cambridgeshire stay independent and maintain social contact with friends and

the community. CNC works with volunteers, either helping them to set up local ‘good neighbour schemes’ – like

Friends in Deed - or by running some cross-county schemes themselves.

There are two special events to look out for. The Quiet Christmas Service, a quiet, reflective event which Friends

in Deed has always supported, will be held on Christmas Eve at St Mary’s Church at 8pm. Our popular Winter

Tea Party will take place as usual in the Methodist Hall on 16 February at 2.30pm. As ever, transport will be avail-

able on request to collect and return those who would like a lift to either or both events.

For help or information contact:

Coordinator: Christine Lawrence 07810 006598. Requests for transport: Andy Scott 07914 669967.
