FRIENDS IN DEED

We are once again greatly indebted to Pam and Miles Falla who very kindly hosted the

Friends in Deed Summer Tea Party on 10 August at the Bowlings. It was very well-

attended

,

with over 40 people coming along for tea and cakes in the garden. In spite of an

uncertain weather forecast it turned out to be warm and sunny and everyone enjoyed the

afternoon. Many thanks also to Brenda Steadman who organised the party and to all those

members who, in a variety of roles, helped make it such a success.

The next Drop-in Café will be held on 14 September and subsequently on the second

Wednesday of each month in the Living Stones Room in St Mary’s Church, 2.30pm to 4pm. If you like homemade

cakes, tea and coffee, and a friendly atmosphere, why not come along and join us. All are welcome and transport

is available within the village on request (see below).

Buckden Friends

A big thank you to all who brought me some bras for the young women in Kenya after my request on Buckden

Residents Facebook page. Over 30kg arrived at my home. Thanks to Elouise Lingerie for the generous donation

of ex stock. So pretty I am sure the recipients will be very pleased. Hopefully they will be deemed to be from a

richer family and therefore less likely to be raped. Also a big thank you to Lynne Andrews who facilitated their

delivery to the British collection point in Scotland.

Also thank you to those who came to the Fun Quiz evenings at The Lounge Buckden Marina for supporting the

raffles which were raising funds for St. Mary's Church charity of the month Shelterbox.

There will be a Coffee morning in The Methodist Church on Friday 23rd September, 10 -11.30 am. as our final

effort to reach our target of £650 to buy Buckden's second Shelter Box. Thanks to all who have contributed. If you

can bring cakes and something for a bring and buy stall for this event that would be much appreciated.

We are collecting £40 deposits for next May's holiday to Eastbourne. Date 15th-19th May 2017. Only a few single

rooms available so please pair up if you can. Pop cheque to Pat King, 32 Mayfield Buckden, near the surgery.

Phone 811020 if you want more details. All welcome.

Thanks for our great community, Pat & Brian King

HDC Refuse Permission for the proposed development of 180 houses off Lucks Lane, Buckden

Firstly, a big thank you to the 221 Buckden and local residents who have taken the time to write to HDC objecting to this

planned development; your voices were heard! Several objecting authorities, including HDC, Cambs County Council and

Highways England, preferred the public's detailed local knowledge to the developer's sweeping statements. By comparison, a

similar development on the outskirts of Brampton had 12 objecting letters, little opposition from other authorities and was re-

cently approved.

On 15th August 2016, Hunts District Council refused planning permission for the proposed plan to build 180 houses off Lucks

Lane. Their detailed letter is available on their planning website (Ref: 16/00576/OUT, Documents, Page 4, Decision Notice

dated 15/8/2016).

In summary, their reasons for refusal were that the plans were unsustainable within the meaning of the National Planning Poli-

cy Framework, based on the significant environmental harm that would be caused by the proposed development, including:

the erosion of the rural character gap between Buckden & Stirtloe

the illustrative layout proposed cramped, over-intensive housing of insufficiently high quality which failed to integrate

into the rural landscape

the possible destruction of archaeology

the anticipated increase in outbound vehicle trips from the development via Stirtloe Lane onto the A1 making it

‘extremely likely’ that collisions of ‘serious harm’ would result

the developers were unable to demonstrate that the traffic impact of the proposed development on local highways, with-

in and around Buckden, would not be severe

possible flooding risk from Grafham Water

·the refusal should be considered in the context of the HDC’s being able to demonstrate a 5 year housing plan

(including 5% buffer) without reliance on this proposal. And even if the HDC were not able to demonstrate this, any

benefits of the proposal would still be outweighed when assessed against the NPPF policies overall.

This is good news for all those wanting to protect Buckden from unwanted expansion into the surrounding countryside, a mas-

sive increase in population and excessive traffic. BUT, it is likely that the developer will appeal the HDC’s refusal within the

next six months or will submit amended plans for a smaller development, so we must remain diligent. The Protect Buckden

Committee will continue to monitor the situation and will keep you updated.

Thank you for your time and interest, this matter still concerns everyone in Buckden and in all Huntingdonshire villages

(because it would set a precedent for unopposable expansion of all villages). Please see the Forum on the Buckden Rounda-

bout website for detailed information concerning this proposed development. Many thanks, protectbuckdensfu-

ture@gmail.com.

Yours, The Protect Buckden’s Future Steering Committee
