HEATING OIL THEFT
Heating oil theft, most prevalent in the winter months of the year when tanks are likely to be full and the daylight hours are
short. If a thief successfully steals from your heating oil tank it’s important that you implement extra security measures to re-
duce the risk of being targeted again. Please see the following suggestions :
•
MONITOR YOUR TANK Check the tank gauges regularly to alert you to any sudden drop in oil level, which might
indicate a theft. This action might also help the police in any subsequent investigation by narrowing down the
times of the offence.
•
WHERE POSSIBLE KEEP YOUR TANK OUT OF SIGHT If installing a new tank, consider the placement very carefully
ideally your tank should not be visible from the road or near external gates or doors
•
TANK SECURITY Fit a sturdy lock to the fill cap of your tank (and also the vent cap, if possible) and consider in-
stalling a security cage or protective casing to your tank and any exposed pipes Ideally any casing should be locked
with a closed shackle padlock which can’t be easily broken with bolt croppers.
•
INSTALL SECURITY LIGHTING Install a motion sensor security light to alert you to any late night visitors.
•
CCTV The cost of CCTV systems has dropped over the past few years, making basic packages more affordable. If
you decide to install a system, place a ‘’CCTV” sign on your gate to let potential thieves know that you are taking
measures to protect your property.
•
SIGNAGE A cheaper alternative to CCTV is to place a ‘’Beware of the Dog‘’ sign on your garden gate. Thieves tend
to avoid houses that have dogs as they may bark and attract attention during a theft.

RBL Poppy Appeal 2018
The 2018 Poppy Appeal will start on 29 October and last until Remembrance Sunday 11 November. This year 11 November
marks the centenary of the end of World War I, the Great War – “the war to end all wars”. History has proved this wrong, but
with the help of the RBL and other charities more survivors of recent conflicts have made brave and determined efforts to live
on which has become the motto of the RBL.
Our fund raising will continue but the Buckden Branch of the RBL has decided to make this the last year of the House to House
collection. Sometimes appalling weather , the coincidence of Halloween, trick or treating and dark nights has led to more peo-
ple being reluctant to open doors. Poppies will always be available from local shops and businesses, the Surgery, the School and
Churches etc. in the village.
I must pay tribute and very grateful thanks to all the House to House collectors who for many years have given their time and
efforts to this very worthwhile cause. If you have any queries please contact me on 810070.
