FRIENDS IN DEED
Date for the diary! The Winter Tea Party will be held on Wednesday 21
st
February.
An informative Welcome Pack is available for those new to the village (put together by Friends in Deed and
the Parish Council), including a village street map highlighting amenities, details of transport facilities avail-
able in the village, and a footpath map of the local area. There is a reference copy to view in the Village
Library and a pack may be obtained from Georgina West, Clerk to the Parish Council, from her office in the Village Hall. So if you
are new to the village, or know someone who is, then do let them know that the pack is available - or even get one for them!
With the nights drawing in and the weather getting colder, if anyone needs support with village shopping or errands during bad
weather, don’t hesitate to get in touch. Also if anyone is housebound during the coming months and would like a visit from one
of our volunteers then give us a call on the Coordinator’s number below and we will see what we can do to help. And if anyone
would like to join us and be a volunteer visitor or driver then please call the Coordinator.

BUCKDEN WI
‘Beware of Sharks!’ the topic for our October meeting, turned out to be a most interesting and thought-
provoking lecture on Estate Planning by Mr. Keyth Rooney. As well as his professional expertise in the
subject, his family experience of dealing with the needs of elderly parents gave his talk a personal touch.
His illustrated talk, with many humorous touches, made a serious subject very accessible and we all came
home more aware of potentially scandalous overcharging in some areas of the legal system (“the sea is
full of sharks”) and of some ways to avoid the worst pitfalls. In particular, he stressed the urgency of having wills and lasting
powers of attorney securely in place to avoid the unnecessary payment of excessive estate duty by our families, come the day.
Our next meeting on 7th November is entitled ‘Show and Tell’ when our talented ladies are invited to share their skills. The
competition will be for a beaded item. As ever, visitors and new members will be most welcome.

Village Festival 2017
The Village Festival made a profit of just over £3,000
this year which is a record. The money raised from
the stalls and raffle was to install new safety fencing
to prevent cricket and footballs entering the chil-
dren’s play area. You should see this being erected
soon. £750 has also been donated by Buckfest to fully
fund this Village Hall Trust project.
One of the fairground operators wrote to me after-
wards to say
“It was one of the nicest, well organised
events I have attended. The people of Buckden made
the event, all polite and friendly and joined in, you
must be proud to say you live there.
” One of our big
food providers also said the same!
