Buckden Roundabout
November 2017
School & Pre-School
It may be getting darker outside, but we’re trying to keep
things bright in Preschool. In October, the children enjoyed the
Halloween party, Halloween crafts and the last of the sunshine
while relaxing in our lovely new den. Our new den was ideal for
decorating with leaves for transformation to a Sukkah, as part
of our learning about the Jewish festival of Sukkot. The children
also made honey cake for Sukkot and salt dough lamps as part
of their learning about Diwali.
Our shape theme weeks were also brightened up with triangle
sandwiches at snack time for triangle week and crumpets – for
circle week, of course! The children were also practising their
fine motor skills and pincer grip by picking up brightly-coloured
chickpeas with our giant tweezers, making leaf and Stick Man
pictures, and printing autumn trees with circular objects. This
month, the children will be making colourful firework pictures
and we will be talking about fire and firework safety. We have
also started our colour themes, which will take us up to Christ-
mas.
Finally, as it’s Thanksgiving this month, it’s a good time for us
to give some thanks ourselves - first, to everyone who attended
or helped to organise our Halloween Party, especially Pauline
from Dancing Tots who got our party moving! Also, big thanks
to Nisa – some people may be unaware that they supply items
for our snack free of charge.
We still have places available for some sessions. To arrange a
visit or book a place for your child, contact our Manager, Den-
ise Carter, on 07941 671999. You can also contact our Chair-
person, Tizzy Pape, at

Buckden Local History Society - Reminiscences!
Via a visitor to our stall during the Village Festival afternoon we received a delightful essay from a past resident of Buckden who
left the village at the age of eighteen. The story comprised tales from family history going back generations from a childhood
free of television let alone electronic gadgetry! There were also descriptions of village characters.
If you lived on the High Street before 1960 what was it like? We have been told of the trouble with lorries parked while the driv-
ers sat in the café having their break. The vehicles would have been half the size and speed of the present-day monsters but
would have been dirtier and in some cases appallingly noisy. Were you troubled by this or as a child fascinated*? Did you use
the café for sweets? If so what was it like? Was it full of smoke and steam and the smell of frying bacon?
If you were brought up in Buckden in the 1940s and 1950s or earlier we would like to hear from you or to receive some of your
stories not just about the High Street.
Where were the best blackberries? Did you fall in the river? Where were the best places to make dens?

* There was a working steam lorry on the Great North Road in the 1950s - a crew of two with the fireman raking the fire while the lorry was stopped at traffic
lights - not Buckden obviously!
A big thank you from the Isaac Family
We would like to say a massive thank you to the people of
Buckden for their support, help, generosity and donations
over the last 10 months. We can not begin to list everyone,
but would like to thank all those who donated through our
Just Giving site, those who donated through the Church, the
round table and also to Liz and Arthur Payne, Barry at Nisa
and Elspeth Thomas for their very generous donations. We
would also like to say thank to our amazing friends (Jane Da-
ley, Andrea Linnell and Catherine Deans) who together organ-
ised a shopping day and raffle, raising a considerable amount
of money. Thanks also goes to all the local businesses who
donated brilliant prizes and to the stall holders who very gen-
erously donated their commission from the day (Carole Coram
the very talented village seamstress, Moira Frost from Cabi
and Mel from Little Gems).
Ed is now back home in Buckden and is making positive pro-
gress. He is still reliant on a wheelchair but has started his
walking journey. We have successfully raised almost enough
funds for the downstairs wetroom and we hope this work will
start in November.
Thank you all, we are lucky to live in such a lovely village.
