Village News

BUCKDEN WI

At our May meeting Doctor Maureen James was warmly welcomed and she gave an interesting talk on

Cambridge Folklore. Maureen explained that some people have lucky charms and that they believe in

the power of them. A lucky charm in Cambridgeshire is a moles foot. Most of us were familiar with sus-

picions such as touch wood, cross your fingers, black cat in the hope that something will be all right.

Maureen went onto rites of passage and often a new baby is given a silver coin for protection and wealth. At Halloween if some-

one peels an apple and then throws it on to the floor, it will land in an initial letter and this is thought to be the initial of the per-

son they will marry. At a wedding, sometimes a chimney sweep attends to give the wedding couple luck. Often after a wedding

the bride turns her back to the crowd and throws her bouquet and according to Folklore the lucky recipient catching the bou-

quet will be the next person to be married.

Of course, Folklore and suspicions may be something you believe in or not but nevertheless they are interesting. Maureen made

this talk inspiring and it was evident, she has a passion for this subject.

Members were able to ask questions which initiated lots

of conversation. A very interesting evening with positive feedback.

At the next Meeting Tuesday 5

th

June 7:30pm in the Millard Suite at the village hall our speaker Pat Doody will be talking all

about Britain’s Wild Flowers. Everyone welcome.

The competition is a leaf collage on A4 paper.

Zumba is staying!

The Zumba class, which moved here while works were being done in their original venue, has decided to stay here! This is

great news for everyone who loves this fun, fitness class.

Chairman vacancy at Buckden Village Trust

The current chairman of the Trust, John Thelwall, has notified the Trustees that it is his intention to retire as chairman in July

2018. The Trustees are therefore looking for a community-minded person to take over the position.

It is an interesting and rewarding position. The Village Hall and the recreation ground have a central position in village life.

The Trustees, and particularly the chairman, contribute a great deal to the village in managing this well used facility we are

lucky enough to have.

The job of chairman is not particularly demanding nor does it take a great deal of time. It does not require any special skills.

If you would like to make a major contribution to the village community please contact me (details below).

Don’t forget that as residents of Buckden you all receive discounted rates on Hall hire. Please call or email me if you

would like to find out more information.
