BUCKDEN WI

At the June meeting members were entertained with a talk “All about Alpacas” by Nicky

Sly. It was very informative. Nicky needed something to keep her grass down in her pad-

docks and her husband suggested looking at Alpacas. Nicky fell in love with them and

bought some Alpacas. In her talk Nicky showed us some wool and pictures of her Alpaca

herd. Nicky was an enthusiastic speaker and enjoyable to listen to.

On 5

th

July it is our Party Evening at the school to celebrate the Queen’s 90

th

Birthday.

The competition will be a pretty napkin.

CAPTAIN JOHN GREEN VC

The 1

st

July this year is both the 100

th

anniversary of the first day of the Battle

of the Somme and the 100

th

anniversary of the day on which Captain John

Green RAMC, born in Buckden, won a posthumous Victoria Cross while

serving with 1/5 Sherwood Foresters in the diversionary attack on

Gommecourt. As you probably know, all VCs are being commemorated by

paving stones presented, in each case, on the anniversary of the day when

the award was won, so the one that is special to our village will be presented

on 1

st

July.

There will be a ceremony at the Green Memorial in the High Street starting at

11.00 am sharp which will then be continued at the War Memorial at St.

Mary’s Church, where the commemorative stone will be placed. The Buck-

den Branch of the Royal British Legion has been invited to be involved in the

ceremony and I hope that as many members as possible will show up on the

day. Ideally, dress should be reasonably formal and medals should be worn.
