Thought for the Month
Dear Friends,
The summer is nearly over and autumn nearly here. How was
summer 2019 for you?
I hope many of us have managed to enjoy a break and a time
of rest and relaxation with our friends and families. Weather
wise of course it has been a summer of extremes. We have
had some of hottest days ever recorded (including apparently
the
hottest), but also with storms, strong wind and heavy rain.
For the churches in the village it has been a happy but busy
summer. Here at St Mary’s our mid-summer fete and fun day
was a victim of the weather, but thanks to the hard work of all
the volunteers and the many people who supported it, we
enjoyed a happy and successful day with most of the activities
moved from outside into the church. As Churches Together
we ran a stall at the Festival and at the time of writing we
have also enjoyed our ‘Holidays at Home’ holiday club for the
‘retired but young at heart’. We are now looking forward to
our childrens Holiday Club at the end of August, when more
than 30 children will spend 3 mornings enjoying games, activi-
ties and crafts and also learning about some of the stories and
characters in the bible.
Autumn of course heralds new beginnings. It is the start of a
new school year, and many of the clubs and societies will be
re-starting after the summer break. Nationally, it will no doubt
be a time of big debates, controversy and decision. So a sea-
son of challenges with, hopefully, opportunities but without
doubt much uncertainty.
Autumn can also perhaps a time to reflect where we stand on
the big issues in terms of life and faith. Our churches will be
holding major festivals of celebration such as Harvest and
Christmas, and also of more sober reflection at All Souls and
Remembrance.at which of course you will all be most wel-
come. But, as you see elsewhere on these pages, there are
services each week for us to come and consider or reconsider
connecting with a loving God who Christians believe holds us
and the future whatever it may be in his hands.
We look forward to seeing you.
Best wishes,
Jes
