gathered just behind Vineyard Way and was taken by

September 2018
As I write, the scorching summer that we’ve had so far
seems to be in abeyance, at least for now. One of the
consequences of the hot, dry weather is that this year’s
grain harvest has been earlier than usual (check out this
month’s cover photo). My farmer friend tells me that his
yields are down about 15%, but quality is high. I noticed
today that, surprisingly in spite of the drought, there is
a lot of fruit on the blackthorn, so it’ll be a good year for
making sloe gin.
The proposed developments around Buckden are mak-
ing lots of waves and are discussed in the Parish Council
report, both County and District Councillors’ reports and
elsewhere in this edition, in a letter to the Editor and in
an announcement from the group “Keep Buckden a Vil-
lage”.
There is an article by John Thelwall on page 13 that trac-
es the history of one of the older houses in Buckden. It is
based on the deeds of the house, which were donated
to the Buckden History Society. It’s fascinating to see the
differences between the old and modern legal require-
ments for buying and selling properties, and how prices
have varied since the mid-1800s. I enjoyed John’s article
and I hope you do too. We’d like to include more inter-
esting articles like this, so please consider writing some-
thing for us.
Please remember to visit the Roundabout website.
There are often articles there that we could not fit into
the print edition, as well as information that arrives dur-
ing the month:
