Buckden Roundabout
November 2019
Scouts & British Legion
BUCKDEN BRANCH - ROYAL BRITISH LEGION
Remembrance Sunday this year falls on the 10
th
November;
there will be the usual service at St. Mary’s Parish Church and I
hope to see as many of you as possible there. Many anniver-
saries have been celebrated this year, but the most sombre
one is not a cause for celebration; 2019 sees the 80
th
anniver-
sary of the start of the Second World War, a war which caused
casualties massively in excess of those suffered in the Great
War, particularly civilian casualties.
As always, it would be very nice to have more of our British
Legion members on parade. We would also welcome any serv-
ing or ex-members of the armed forces (regular or reserve) to
parade with us even if you are not members and, yes, I will try
to recruit you! If you are able to parade, it would be very help-
ful if you can let me know by Friday 9
th
November so that I can
make sure that enough pews are reserved.
There will be numbers of us there who were children during
the war or were, like me, born shortly after it (I can work out
fairly precisely when my father came home from Italy!). If you
have a relative’s service medals from the Second World War,
this year is surely the time to polish them up and wear them
(normally on the right side of your coat or jacket). It would be
really good to see those who served remembered in church in
this way.
On Saturday before Remembrance Sunday the Eagle Choir,
who performed Karl Jenkins’
The Armed Man
so well for us last
year will be coming again to perform Andrew Lloyd Webber’s
Requiem
. This is a truly amazing piece of music and I hope as
many as possible will come along to hear it. There are full de-
tails elsewhere in this edition of the Roundabout. And there
will be posters up in the village.
As you will have worked out, Armistice Day this year is Monday
11
th
November, the day after Remembrance Sunday. There
will be the usual short ceremony at the War Memorial starting
at about 10.45 a.m. so do come along if you can.

Beer Festival 2019
Have you heard that 1
st
Southoe and Buckden Scouts are off to
Switzerland next year? We’re taking a coach load of Scouts and
Explorers to the Kandersteg International Scout Campsite, in
the Swiss Alps. To support this, there are a series of fundraising
events organised, including this year’s Scout Beer Festival held
on 13
th
and 14
th
September. There was some confusion over
whether this was our 5
th
, 4
th
or 3
rd
event – in the end we
agreed that it was the 4
th
, having held the first one in Septem-
ber 2016, each masterminded by Steve Reynolds and Jon Dray-
cott.
The format was similar to previous years, starting on Friday
evening, continuing with a family day on Saturday afternoon,
and the finale on Saturday night. With 12 beers and ciders, a
variety of gins, food and entertainment throughout, it was ‘full
on’, for those doing the organising.
Friday saw Rick and Ian behind the Chip counter, Beer Bellies
providing the music and a good crowd all evening. On Saturday
the weather was sunny, providing an excellent family after-
noon session. The Two
Old Gits once again
played banjo and accordi-
on in the marquee out-
side, entertaining young
and old. The serving of
tea and cake also proved
to be a great success.
Saturday night saw Sticky
Fingers playing in the hall, with Pete serving ‘Bonza Aussie
Tucker’ outside. The beer and cider stocks held up well
throughout the event, keeping customers merry, with Lester
and his team offering a selection of alternatives at the multi-
coloured gin bar.
In the end we raised over £4200 towards the
Kandersteg trip. This helps us to support the
aims of Scouting, providing young people
with experiences to develop the skills for
life.
A huge thanks to everyone who came along
to support the event, we hope you had fun!
Finally, a round of applause, to all our spon-
sors, volunteers and parent helpers who
make this possible.
