The Migrant Crisis Response
The recent proposal (see page 9), in respect of Buckden, whilst put forward with admirable intentions and sympa-
thy’ is not the answer as it might not be helpful. Why? What is a better alternative?
Why? Taking in one family diverts attention from tackling the real causes, and a long-term sustainable solution. It
does not resolve the question of millions of others who could follow and the problems for the UK (the most crowd-
ed country in Europe, with a rapidly expanding population and a current density greater than China.) Problems
range from lack of housing for present numbers to increased demands on social structure and services. Is it rea-
sonable to provide for others when we already have housing provision problems for the indigenous population of
Buckden?
There are a host of other problems to consider: viz: The Syrian problem is population growth related, 5 million in
mid 1950’s to some 27 million now, exhibiting recurring problems in the Arab world about political structure, aspi-
ration, corruption and population growth and profile. Does the current failure to recognize and deal with this help
anyone? A sustainable solution includes the return of those of people, to rebuild their own country, rather than
using them to bolster the shortcomings of our own economic planning. Many refugees have been through traffick-
ers, settling them here makes the traffickers market work. Do we really want that?
A practical solution is twofold.
1.
Form a pressure group to write to MPs, MEPs, the PM, stating the need for much greater UN involvement in
peacekeeping and safe havens in the area.
2.
Form a group spending as much, if not more, on supporting UN work in the area to help keep people near
their land, which will need them to rebuild it.
