Buckden Roundabout

April 2018

As I write this, the children are busy making lovely

handprint flower cards for Mother’s Day. They have also

been enjoying walks in the snow, dancing and our new

loose parts play, which encourages them to use objects in a

more creative way and play more imaginatively. On one

very noisy day, they decided to use the twigs as drumsticks!

We are now looking forward to our Easter activities, which

will include lots of crafts, an Easter egg hunt and a trip to St.

Mary’s to learn about the Christian meaning of Easter. The

children will also be learning about Passover and marking

World Down’s Syndrome Day by wearing #lotsofsocks!

In April, when our new term begins, our leavers who are

due to start school in September will be starting PE sessions,

enjoying a variety of physical activities and getting used to

changing their clothes independently.

Looking forward to May, we are offering you a chance for a

spring declutter! If you have items that need a new home,

you can bring them along to our fundraising jumble sale and

cake sale on May 11th, 3.30-5.30 at the village hall. You can

either donate your items to preschool from April 23rd or, if

you prefer, hire a table for £10 and turn your unwanted

items into cash.

If you would like a table at the jumble sale, please email

Angela, our fundraising coordinator, at

buckdenpreschoolfundraising@gmail.com

to arrange it.

BUCKDEN CHURCH OF

ENGLAND SCHOOL

(Primary Academy Trust)

As Spring approaches, we are busy preparing for the better

weather. The school managed to stay open and continue as

usual during the cold and snowy weather – the children en-

joyed playing in the snow on the school field. March has been a

busy month with a variety of activities. Our Year 5 children had

a Medieval Day. The children (and teachers) came to school

dressed in clothes of the period. They learnt about life in the

time of the Magna Carta, around the early 1200’s, what life was

like for a peasant in 1215, how the feudal system worked, what

King John was really like and how the Magna Carta came about.

They also took part in a variety of activities including writing in

authentic ink and designing their own coat of arms.

The PTA organised a Mothers Day shop for the children, where

they could buy a Mothers Day present for their mothers/

grandmothers. This proved to be very popular with the children

and all gifts were duly sold. We hope you all liked your pre-

sents. The PTA also hosted a Mothers Day Afternoon Tea for

our Mums and Grandmas. Our visitors enjoyed a cup of tea

with their scones or cake – in some cases both! It was a lovely

afternoon – we were pleased to see so many of our mums and

visitors join us.

Our Year 3/4 children have been very busy writing, learning,

practising and performing their end of term play. ‘What a

Knight’ was performed to our parents and friends who came

along and, we hope, enjoyed the production. Well done to all

our budding actors and actresses and to the staff who turned

their hand to writing, directing, producing, costume and scen-

ery making and prompters.

Our football teams have been playing in many games and tour-

naments with other local schools. We will let you know how

they fared in the next edition on The Buckden Roundabout.

We would like to wish the residents of Buckden a Happy Easter.

We look forward to seeing you when we return for the Summer

Term on Monday 16

th

April.

School & Pre-school

Buckden in Spring

(continued from page 14)

An absolute “must-do” for May is to spend an evening at Paxton Pits with its world-famous Nightingales, another

African migrant. The first two weeks of the month are best and if you visit in the evening, or early in the day, you will

be treated to the best performance from these stunning songsters. The richness of their song is incredible and even

better at night when there is little competition from any other sounds.

I hope to see you out and about over the next few months and I’ll be back in the July edition with more tips on what

wildlife to look out for in the Buckden area.

Mark Ward is a nature author and the RSPB’s Editor-in-Chief, producing its magazines and other communica-

tions for its 1.1 million members. His latest book, “Wildlife on Your Doorstep” is based on his experiences

with the wildlife of the Buckden area. It is available from Amazon and all good booksellers.
