Thought for themonth
As the family of God our celebrations of the resurrection of Jesus Christ continue through the weeks that follow
Easter Sunday. Although our chocolate eggsmayonly last a fewdays our celebration of Easter is one that contin-
ues a lot longer – 50 days to be precise. During this period we continue to celebrate the new life that God offers
to all people andwe are reminded of how the disciples and friends of Jesuswere transformed by their encounters
with the risenChrist giving us an opportunity to consider how the risen Lord can transform our lives and our com-
munity.
One person who had a particularly transforming experience of the presence of the risen Lord in his life was John
Wesley, the founder of theMethodist movement. In his journal hewrites about how on the evening of 24
th
May he
went ‘very unwillingly’ - to ameeting of a little group of Christians in a house in Aldersgate Street, London. Here,
while someonewas reading aloud from thewritings of Martin Luther, the great German reformer, JohnWesley felt
his heart ‘strangely warmed’ by the love of God. ‘If felt I did trust in Christ, Christ alone, for salvation ; and an as-
surancewas givenme that He had takenaway
my
sins, even
mine
, and saved
me
for the lawof sin and death’.
This overwhelming sense of God’s love for him personally set John on firewith a desire to spread thegood news
of God’s love to all people. And thus Johnbegana life time of travellingup anddown the country preaching in
fields andmarket placesmaking knownwhat God had doneand he visitedBuckden onat least threeoccasions
between 1781& 1784.
Whenwe have encountered the risen Lord in our lives and our hearts are filledwithan awareness of God’s love
for us thenwe too are called to tell others of God’s love and sharewhat God has done in our liveswith others.
Godbless you all
