FRIENDS IN DEED
There are times in our lives when
we could all do with a little extra
support or companionship what-
ever our age or circumstance.
Friends in Deed is a voluntary group which was set up to sup-
port people in Buckden. The help we can provide includes:-
•
Companionship – visiting you at home for a friendly
chat. This can be a regular arrangement or a one-off
visit.
•
Our Community Café runs every month (on the 2
nd
Wednesday) and is open to all regardless of age, gen-
der, faith (or no faith), sexual orientation, colour, be-
liefs. Come along for help and support (if you need it)
or just a cuppa, cake and a chat.
•
Practical support - we can signpost to professional
agencies such as foodbank, debt agencies, citizens ad-
vice and have other information available to help point
you in the right direction.
•
Local Transport to appointments at the hospital, den-
tist or chiropodist for instance or to village events -
when family, friends and public transport are not avail-
able.
A note for the diary - The 2020 Friends in Deed
Winter Tea
Party

th
March in the
Methodist Hall from 2.30 - 4pm
To contact us:
Just drop in to the Community Café which we run on
the 2

the Living Stones Room at St Mary’s Church Buckden.
You will be very welcome.
If you do need help or if you would like to join us in providing
help to others, please call our co-ordinator, Angie, on 07810
006598.
For transport requests, please call our new transport co-
ordinator Peter Mount on 07914 669967. Leave a message,
giving as much notice as possible and he will call you back.
We are always on the lookout for volunteer drivers, so if you
would like to help, then please get in touch. There is no fixed
commitment, you only agree on a journey if the date and time
suits you and most journeys are to Huntingdon or St Neots.
You will also receive a mileage allowance.
The UK Ladybird Survey
The Huntingdonshire local group of the Wildlife Trust invites
you to this illustrated talk, which will be given by Professor
Helen Roy on Wednesday 12
th
February 2020.
Helen is an ecologist with a particular interest in insects, envi-
ronmental change and citizen science.
Over the last ten years Helen has led the UK Ladybird Survey,
which has been monitoring the rapid spread of the non-native
Harlequins since their first recorded appearance in 2004. The
survey aims to encourage the public to record all species of
ladybirds found in the UK by sending in photos of both our
native and non-native ladybirds. Professor Roy will summarise
the methods and findings and I am sure will provide a very
interesting talk.
Meetings are held at Brampton Memorial Hall, Thrapston
Road, Brampton, PE28 4TB starting at 7.30pm. Everyone wel-
come, booking not necessary.

BUCKDEN WI: ONE HUNDRED YEARS OLD
Our January meeting was, as usual, a sociable time sharing
cheese and wine around our tables as we discussed future
national campaigns and voted for the choice of resolutions to
go forward to the National Annual Meeting in June.
The meeting was just before Buckden’s big climate event:
‘What on Earth can Buckden Do’ which chimes very much with
recent WI campaigning. Members were keen to sign up to help
with refreshments on the day and to be in evidence in their WI
aprons, standing up for this important cause.
At 7.30p.m. on 4
th
February we have a
‘Safe and Well’ visit from the fire ser-
vice and the competition will be a
poem on the theme ‘Red’. Contribu-
tions for the market stall will be wel-
comed. As always, visitors and new
members well be most welcome.
