October 2023

15 Buckden Roundabout October 2023 Village News W.I. At our September Meeting we enjoyed an entertaining talk titled “ It shouldn't hap- pen to a home economist ” by Sian Fox. At 14 Sian decided to do Domestic Science at school, which later became called Home Economics. She achieved both O and A levels. Sian then went to Bath to do a Home Economics degree, which was also where Mary Berry went, but a few years earlier than Sian, alt- hough Sian has met Mary Berry. After graduating from Bath, Sian worked 10 years as a job officer in the trading standards department, where only men were on the staff, often she was asked to make the tea. One of her jobs was to go into a pub and ask for a pint of beer, as a complaint had come in saying the beer was watered down. Sian made us all laugh, as she had to pluck up courage to go into the pub. The Landlord questioned her about being on her own and, also asking for a pint. Her reply was “ I am really real- ly, thirsty, ” so I need a pint. Sian tested the beer by a scientific method and found that water had been added. The Landlord was prosecuted and the men in the office were impressed. Sian then worked for Sainsbury ’ s for 23 years as a Home Econ- omist and during that time, she worked in the store encourag- ing people to taste things in the hope they would be encour- aged to buy the product. One day Sian was cooking Crème Brulé in the store when firemen came running in, unbeknown to Sian, she was cooking under the smoke sensor, and it had gone off and this was linked to the fire station. This was very amusing for everyone, and the firemen sampled the food. Sian was also on the advisory team at Sainsbury ’ s. Sian worked on a team with Jamie Oliver, encouraging children to eat healthy food in schools, one child thought olives were tadpoles. She also worked at agricultural shows demonstrating cooking. Sian met Sophie Wessex at one of these shows. Sian has also worked with the Calendar girls. Sian kept the audience enthralled as she is an excellent speak- er, using anecdotes to enhance her talk making it very inter- esting and amusing. We all enjoyed the evening. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 3rd October at 7:30pm in the Millard Suite and our talk will be Whyte Wytch. A Cam- bridgeshire Cheese. Our Sponsors have helped enormously throughout the year and have ensured that we have been able to keep all our players doing the thing they love – playing football, whilst still making vital investments in our club to ensure that we are safeguarding its future for years to come. We are eternally grateful to all of them, your generosity is so appreciated.
