Thought for the month Greetings It is hard to believe that it is November already. With the fran- tic pace of life, we live life seems to fly past. Remembrance Day each November, through focusing on those who have made sacrifices for us in times of war, invites us to both express our gratitude and seek inspiration from their lives. It also provides us with the opportunity to reflect on our own lives. For Roman Catholics and some other Christian traditions, No- vember invites its members to enter this type of reflection for the month as we are called to remember those who have died and gone before us. Feasts and celebrations such as ‘ All Saints ’, ‘ the day of the dead ’, ‘ all Souls ’ provide different ex- pressions of the Christian belief that death is not the end of our life but a moment of transformation and transition which gives rise to the hope that we may meet once again. During this month of November, I would invite you to make some time to remember those people who have been im- portant to you that have died. Take some time to remember how they lived and what made them important to you. Maybe your own life experience, all these years later, gives you a greater appreciation of the wisdom and gifts that they shared with you. Remembrance of those who have had a significant impact on our lives may recall unresolved feelings and hurts that have been carried for years. Our own life experiences may offer us a better insight into what led to the hurts and feelings so they can be let go of and put to rest, so some level of inner peace might be received. In looking back and remembering these people that through the entanglement of our lives have challenged and inspired us, we are also invited to look at our own lives and the choices that we make today. How do we think we will be remembered by others in the future? What would we want to be remem- bered for? In what ways do the choices we make today help or hinder us creating that legacy that we desire to leave? Taking time to remember those who have died, reminds us that our own time on this earth is limited. This makes the time that we do have even more precious. How are we using this precious commodity? Are we using this precious resource in the ways that are effective and help us achieve what we value as important? Do we waste time by procrastinating and putting off tasks that need to be done? Remembering those who have died and gone before us also can be a reminder that none of us know how much of this precious resource we really have? So as a fruit of this reflection on the reality of our life and its limitations I encourage you to use your time to let your loved ones know how much they mean to you. In those relationships where walls have sprung up try to build bridges that help you reconnect. Let love move forward what is important in your life.
