14 Buckden Roundabout November 2023 Support Buckden Businesses Deborah Jane Fitness Continuing our occasional series “ Support Buckden Business- es ”, we recently visited Debbie Gaughan to talk about Deborah Jane Fitness , the new fitness gym for women, right on your doorstep. Finding time on her hands, with kids grown up, Debbie decided to do something for herself and move into an area of interest to her. Having enjoyed attending classes herself for over 15 years, she qualified in Level 2 Coaching and Level 3 Personal Training with Nutrition in February this year. Many of her friends are personal trainers so she continues to gain lots of knowledge and support from those in the profession. As a 50 plus woman, she can relate to what women need and offer them support, advice, motivation and encouragement in reaching their goals whilst having an element of fun. If you aren ’ t enjoying what you do, you are less likely to make it a part of your lifestyle. For those new to exercise, walking into a busy commercial gym can be quite intimidating. Debbie works from a private gym at her home in Perry Road, where women feel more comfortable, with no need to worry about onlookers. Every woman will have her own goals when she starts training and Debbie ’ s pri- vate personal training sessions are designed to help achieve these for her. Some ladies prefer working out with others in a group environ- ment and Debbie currently offers a few classes each week. All abilities, from complete beginners to improvers, are welcome. Debbie will coach, encourage and, importantly, ensure that correct technique is used. Ladies new to using weights soon feel stronger and notice the benefits in everyday life, such as gardening, helping their children move into student accommo- dation, or playing with the grandkids. Everyone in the class is very supportive and they don ’ t compare themselves to others. Classes are a circuit format, with a range of exercises that are done for a short time, with rests between, giving a full - body workout, arms, legs, bums and tums, as well as cardio. Each week brings a new set of exercises, targeting the same areas, but providing variety to avoid boredom. As we get older, it is important to add strength training which helps to increase bone density. People still believe that lifting weights will make women bulky, but Debbie assures us that that doesn ’ t happen. You will become stronger and more toned, but not ‘ bulked up ’. And don ’ t underestimate the men- tal health benefits – lifting weights is a great way to improve mood and give women a bit of me - time. Other benefits are the chance to meet up with like - minded welcoming people, make some new friends and get fit at the same time. Debbie ’ s future plans include getting more women on board and introducing more sessions, as well as completing further training in nutrition and exercise for post - natal or menopausal women. As the concept of training with weights can be scary for some women, especially if starting later on in life, Debbie is happy to meet with potential new clients, have a reassuring chat and let them have a look around. Getting started is usually the hardest part and Debbie is happy to help you over this hurdle. Just take that first step and give her a call!
