Four gardeners managed to manhandle the weed suppressing membrane and peg it into position, hoping to keep any new weed seedlings at bay. After a long search on the internet for the correct small - leaved golden marjoram (Golden Marjoram crispum) the herb was found to be available from one of the stall holders at the Plant Sale. The herb nursery have had difficulties persuading enough Golden Marjoram plants to grow uniformly but they should be ready in the next few weeks. Blue slate chippings will cover the rest of the bed and 3 bosses of Santolina will be planted to complete the replica of Bishop Russell ’ s shield. Cutting the box hedging on the last of the knots is just about complete and then the next tasks will be to clear the summer flowering climbers and tie in the new growth. The gardeners had hoped that the climbers growing in the gravel had managed to survive the hot dry weather but it does look as though some of them are struggling. These will need extra care. The saffron plants have survived and the first leaves are just peeping through. The bulbs should produce crocus like leaves and flowers during the next few weeks. The flowers are very short - lived but in the past a few of the saffron filaments have been collected, not enough yet to dye with. Thank you for coming to visit the Knot Garden during the recent FOBT Open Day and Artisan Fair. Your donations will go towards the next knot bed restoration. It ’ s always a pleasure to be able to share the garden and answer queries about the plants. The gardeners work in the garden on Tuesday mornings from 10.00 to lunchtime and are very happy to answer visitors ’ questions.
