June 2024
17 Buckden Roundabout June 2024 Village News W.I. At our May Meeting we had a talk entitled “ Looking after your feet ” by Podiatrist – Alison Woollard. It turned out to be an amusing and informative talk, aided by slides. Alison is a Foot Health Practitioner, which includes chiropody and health issues related to feet. Alison has a pharmaceutical background and can recommend treatments, medication and if a visit is needed to the Surgery. When Alison is out socialising, she rarely says what her profes- sion is, as she then gets asked to look at people ’ s feet. It has happened once in Sainsbury ’ s aisles, swimming pool, etc. Alison asked the question what we think about our feet. Are they ugly, are you embarrassed to show your feet. For most people feet do not venture too much in our lives unless we have problems and sometimes, we cannot see them. Alison told us she sees all foot problems, in - growing toenails, athlete ’ s foot, corns, cracked heels especially in the Summer, bunions, verrucas, arthritis and bacterial infections. Some of us learnt some new words: - subungual haematoma which is a black nail when you have stubbed your toe. Hallux valgus is for a bunion, but these are not caused by wearing shoes but are hereditary. Alison asked the question What can you do to help our feet? • Hygiene – washing our feet regularly and drying between our toes to avoid problems. • Nail cutting – keep toes nail round and to the tip of the toe to protect it. • Cracked heels and corns – use moisturiser especially with urea in it. Things to watch out for – cuts or wounds that do not heal properly. Pain, discomfort, unusual sensations or smells, red- ness moving up the leg and painful swelling that moves in the leg, it could be DVT thrombosis. Result of poorly fitting shoes, corns, sore places, blisters. Wear appropriate shoes for the activity you are doing. Tips for buying shoes: - shop after lunch, take your time, know your foot shape, feel inside, and ensure a good fit. Finally treat yourself to new shoes. Alison gave a good talk, and we will be devoting more time looking after our feet. Our next meeting will be on Tuesday 4th June at 7:30pm in the Millard Suite and it will be “ A Lesson in Sign Language ”. KEEP IT VISIBLE You might think that it would be best to make a property less visible from the street, but all that this serves to do is make it easier for a burglar to get close to a home unnoticed and pro- vide somewhere to hide while carrying out a burglary or theft from the property. ALWAYS MAKE IT DIFFICULT FOR BURGLARS. Consider installing CCTV (or a video doorbell), automatic lighting and alarms to deter burglars from targeting your prop- erty. BE AWARE OF DISTRACTION BURGLARY TACTICS Distraction burglars pretend to be someone they are not to gain entry to your home. Always remember ‘’ if in doubt, keep them out ’’. Also ensure you use your door viewer to see who ’ s there, if you open the door put the chain on first and always ask for ID and check it with the company before letting somebody into your home. IF YOU LEAVE YOUR HOME Use this handy checklist to ensure it is left safe and secure. WINDOWS Are your windows closed and locked? Are your window sensors activated? Have you secured your garage and shed windows with locks? DOORS Is your front door double or deadlocked? Are all the doors to your home locked? Are your door keys kept out of sight (but to hand in case of emergency). INTERIOR Are your inside lights on a switch timer or smart bulb with tim- er? Is your home alarm on? Are your valuable items such as jewellery, car keys, laptops, iPads, cash and phones out of sight? EXTERIOR Are your outside lights on a sensor? Have you cut down tall hedges around the outside of your home? Are expensive items out of sight? Are your vehicles locked along with sheds, side gates, garages, and outbuildings? If you are going away for a while, have you let your neighbours know?
