The box hedging had not been attacked until last summer when one plant showed signs of an infestation of box caterpillars. Quick treatment with nematodes had hopefully stopped the pests in their tracks. At the beginning of April this year, signs were spotted, first in one bed, then another and another. Nematodes were sprayed on the hedges when it stopped raining and by the end of the month many of the caterpillars had disappeared. Not all had been destroyed by the nematodes, some moths flew out when the sprays were being used. So now as well as spraying there are going to be pheromone traps around the garden to catch the moths. Come along to the garden and see how successful the nematodes and traps are. This year the arbours do not have wooden plants supports. Last Autumn the wooden supports started to crum- ble before the plants were ready to be cut back. This could have been a hazard for visitors and gardeners. This year jute netting has been tied on to the frame to support the climbing plants. The hop is already winding its long tendrils around the nets. Knot Garden News
