Engage in the afternoon Our Engage events take a break over the summer but will be back on Monday 21 October with the second part of James Blackwood ’ s talk on The Pathfinder Force of Bomber Com- mand in WW2. Pop in to the library if you would like to reserve a place. And for children … Summer Reading Challenge 2024 It ’ s nearly summer holiday time so we ’ re thinking about this year ’ s Summer Reading Challenge. This year the theme is Marvellous Mak- ers and we ’ ll be inviting children to sign up from Saturday 13 July. The Reading Challenge is aimed at kids up to the age of 11, and is a great way to encourage them to keep reading over the summer holidays. With a sticker re- ward chart, book marks, activity sheets and a very impressive certificate and medal for those who complete the reading, there ’ s lots to keep them motivated. Look out for special activities and events taking place over the summer at Buckden Library, which we will advertise on library windows and the local Facebook page. Terrific Tuesdays Our Tuesday morning Duplo and games for the under 5s con- tinues throughout the summer holidays between 10am and 1pm in our children ’ s library. Rhymetime is every Tuesday at 2.15pm during term time. We will run sessions this month on 2 and 9 July before we take a break for the summer holidays. Rhymetime is perfect for pre - school aged children, including babies. Rhyming language and songs really help with speech and early reading development. No need to book for either of these activities - just drop in to meet up with other families. Children need to be accompanied by an adult. Sensational Saturdays Our popular Saturday morning clubs, Lego (all ages) and Family Games and Puzzles (over 3s), continue this month every week between 10am and 12.30pm. No need to book, just drop in! Children under 12 do need to be accompanied by an adult please and a suggested donation of 50p per builder would be appreciated if you can. The Almshouse flats are unfurnished dwellings, usually, but not always, designed with the needs of older people in mind. The aim is to provide convenient and comfortable accommodation in a setting that allows residents to come and go as they please. The Almshouse is the resident ’ s home for as long as s/he is able to live an independent life. Residents pay a modest weekly maintenance contribution and, in addition, may receive support from the statutory authorities. A Warden is employed to pro- vide access to and liaison with these authorities. Having a Warden also means that support is provided regularly and can assist with summoning help if needed. We now have three vacancies in South ’ s Almshouses (the older of the two properties). If you are interested, please contact the Clerk for more information and an application form: Joe Greenway, 2 St Hughs Road, Buckden, PE19 5UB or joe.greenway@btinternet.com Applications close Friday 28th June 2024.
