The Bittern has been the focus of major conservation efforts. In 1997 there were 11 males recorded calling, or ‘ booming ’ in the whole of the UK. Much work was put in to reverse this decline, including £1.5 million pounds of funding from the European Union, with a target of 100 boomers by 2020. In 2022 over 220 booming males were recorded. Here at Grafham Water all 5 breeding species have been re- ported, and whilst the Bittern is a shy bird that favours hiding in reedbeds, it ’ s well worth a visit to see if you can spot one of these elegant fishermen. - Gregory Belcher Senior Reserves Officer - Grafham Water The Heron family (Continued from page 8) Little egrets
