January 2023

12 Buckden Roundabout January 2023 Village News It was good to be back to our normal Remembrance Sunday service, without any limitation on the size of the congregation, resulting in a very full church. Also, returning the Act of Re- membrance to its usual place in front of the War Memorial appears to have been well received. I have, as always, many people to thank. First, of course, David who presided and Father Jim who preached and everyone else for St Mary ’ s and Buckden Churches Together. The Royal British Legion is all about Remembrance, but Remembrance Sunday is a religious ceremony first and foremost. Secondly, our Standard Bearer, Ian Clarke, who took this on at short no- tice last year and has now agreed to be our official Standard Bearer. Next, my thanks go to Chris Bylett and his choir for their very moving song following the two minutes silence. Thanks also to Richard Noble and to Orynn Wootton of the Scouts, who read the lessons and to Scout Adele Burbidge, who stood up with me to give the dedication; both Orynn and Adele were very clear and precise for their first time doing this. Last, but absolutely not least, to Adele Burbidge, also from the Scouts, who sounded the Last Post and Reveille; both calls were beautifully played and several of those attending took the trouble to tell me so. Finally, many thanks, as ever, to Buckden Methodist Church for providing coffee for everyone at the Methodist Church Hall after the service. Peter Mount. Chairman. The tables were all beautifully deco- rated with Christmas floral arrangements which members could take home with them and the buffet table was laden with delicious party food, wine and soft drinks. Before we attacked the food we were entertained by Hilary, Pat and Jessica to Christmas songs, some which required ac- tions from the audience and some that had a chorus we could all join in with amid much hilarity! As usual, we had a raffle and a competition ( won by Jessica with her letter from Santa ) and also a Lucky Dip of books. Ruth, our President, thanked her committee for their support over the year and wished everyone a very Happy Christmas. It was a most enjoyable evening and, as a final note, the WI wish to thank everyone who either made or bought something from the Christmas Market stall – it made a total of just over £250.00! Thank you! Our next meeting will be on January 3rd 2023 at 7.30pm in the Village Hall when we will be discussing Resolutions and enjoy- ing wine and cheese and a quiz so do come along – you ’ ll be made most welcome. A very Happy Christmas and Peaceful New Year to you all. Upon further enquiries, it became apparent that the caller was ringing from the Bournemouth area and a Google search of the number showed a negative rating. All indications point to this being an insulation scam with the fraudsters impersonating a local government agency to try gain confidence and trust, especially in these times of eco- nomic uncertainly and rising energy costs. If you ’ d like to better insulate your home with all the many benefits which that brings for the planet, your comfort, quali- ty of life and costs, then always use a reputable tradesperson, never a cold caller who contacts you out of the blue.
