Talking with someone in the village recently I discovered that they mistakenly thought that the grounds and facilities at Buckden Towers were funded by monies received from the Catholic Church. They were surprised to discover that the Claretians at Buckden have to be self - sufficient and generate the financial resources that are required themselves for the upkeep of the Property. Having received the property in the 1950’ s many of the buildings were in a state of ruin – the tow- er had no roof or floors and had small trees and bushes grow- ing in the shell! Gradually over the years money was generat- ed through fundraising, the work of the Claretian Community and grant applications to restore the facilities and grounds to the state they are in now. Unfortunately, COVID used up the resources that had been accumulated and in recent years the community is having to rebuild and reestablish the sources of income required to maintain the property and meet the legal requirements such as health and safety. Those of you that walk along the pavement will be aware of the work that is re- quired to protect and maintain these historic walls.
