17 Buckden Roundabout February 2024 Village News Buckden Neighbourhood Watch BEWARE With a New Year we all make plans and sometimes resolutions the Crooks and Scammers are no different. They will be devis- ing new schemes to extract money from you. BEWARE Solicitor, invoice and ‘ CEO ’ scams. Scammers pose as your solicitor, supplier or colleague. You receive an email or invoice that looks like it ’ s from a company or person you ’ re dealing with. But it ’ s been intercepted by scammers who ’ ve changed the payment details – so you send money to their account instead. What you should do? • Always telephone the person who sent the email or invoice to confirm the request is genuine, using a trusted number – one you ’ ve used before or found on their website. • Verbally confirm with them that the account details are correct. • If you haven ’ t paid them before, send a small amount first and check it ’ s been received. IMPERSONATION SCAMS. Scammers often impersonate organisations like banks, HMRC, the police, or even your social media contacts. They ’ ll try to convince you to transfer money, download software or give out personal information. They may threaten you by saying your accounts at risk, or you ’ ll go to court. What you should do? • Legitimate organisations will never ask you to transfer money to a safe account. • Never download software or share your bank details with someone who calls you unexpectedly. • Scammers mimic numbers of well - known companies and even people you know, so use a different telephone to call them back to verify the details you ’ ve been given. PURCHASE SCAMS You could be buying anything from a car to gym equipment, advertised on online auction sites or social. The seller tries to convince you to pay by bank transfer to receive the item quicker or to bypass fees. What you should do? • If you can, see the item in person before buying. If it ’ s a car, checks the details match those held by the DVLA. • Check the seller ’ s reviews and look out for negative feed- back. • Paying by debit or with credit card, or the website ’ s recom- mended payment service, could give you more protection than a bank transfer.
